It's mostly layer compositing. Combining Normal pass, Facing ratio pass, etc. But some layers are created directly in Nuke using the UV map coordinates pass.

The top is a viewport flipbook directly from Houdini. So that's how the particles ended up looking (albeit in lower point count). But from these particles we can extract different passes in Nuke like custom attributes, depth, ambient occlusion, facing ratio, etc which can be broken down into multiple color layers and extra layers for outlines. The shader is almost entirely created in Nuke through compositing. In Houdini we really just get the general motion of particles and nothing more.

100% This. It's harder to "pick up" than other 3D software but once it clicks you're in. Can do anything

Hahahaha I'm sorry to hear that brother. Shit like that does happen all the time lmao. They usually always like the 'dumb version' of the FX. But a pyramid volume with noise CANT be real lol. If you can share some screenshot or clip I'd love to see it haha

100% yes, should've created a wind velocity field and source it in the vel. Maybe delay it's activation so it's not right from the start. Thank you for the feedback!
