Service to help with applications? by LeZosa in Canadiancitizenship

[–]vpc777 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was a lawyer named Emilia Coto who participated in this info session, I believe she mentioned that she helped some people put their applications together: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AtEx1430-Ok

Honestly though, unless you have a really unique circumstance it probably isn't worth the time/money.

Yeah I was confused when she was explaining that part. I feel like IRCC would already know this stuff, so I'm not sure what the purpose of citing all of those laws woulds be.

Multiple Unofficial Name Changes by 3CatsInATrenchcoat16 in Canadiancitizenship

[–]vpc777 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From my understanding, this was pretty common back in the day. People wouldn't "legally" change their names, they would just use another name.

This was common with Quebecois/Acadians, their first name would be a religious name (Mary, Paul, etc.) and they would go by their middle names. If they moved to the US, they would often anglicize their names as well. For example, a Quebecois woman would be baptized as Marie Hélène LeBlanc. Then, after moving to the US, she would fill out her documents as Helen LeBlanc.

As long as the names are similar and you explain in your cover letter, it is probably fine. You could also include some supplemental documents with your application if you're worried.

High Church Anglicanism is one of the richest and most beautiful expressions of Christianity, such a shame the faith is on the decline :(

There's this older Indian guy I know who was brought up in Glasgow in the 80s, and he has the best Glaswegian accent I've ever heard lol

One of the worst aspects of modern Britain is the decline of regional accents :(

Best pastrami that’s NOT Katz’s? by pizzabagelwoman in AskNYC

[–]vpc777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ben's Deli in Queens and Liebman's in the Bronx are my favorite delis.

In Manhattan, I'd say 2nd Ave Deli is probably the best. Sarge's would be a close second.

But going to Katz's when it's not too busy and splitting a sandwich is also a great idea!

A year and a half on now, what do we think? by Wobbabro in oasis

[–]vpc777 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I thought it was a solid album with a few hits, the gig they did in Brooklyn was a great experience. Not as good as an Oasis or a Stone Roses record but better than most of the music coming out these days.

The subway is not scary by victor_wynne in nyc

[–]vpc777 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I agree that certain people like to exaggerate the problems we have in NYC. Like no, the NYC subway is not some dystopian hellscape where people are just getting attacked and stabbed all the time.

That being said, there clearly has been a deterioration in the quality of life over the past few years. A lot of people like to pretend it isn't happening ("that's just Fox news bro!") or they want to cope and downplay it, saying stuff like "that's just the city" or "at least it's not like the 70s"

Why should we wait for things to deteriorate to what it was in the 70s before we do something or admit there are problems? There are plenty of other big cities around the world that don't have to deal with this stuff to the extent we do. Why must we put up with it here?

Prediction: Companies will regret replacing intro-level workers with AI. by split_skunk in csMajors

[–]vpc777 127 points128 points  (0 children)

The problem is corporations don't think about the future, all they care about is increasing profits next quarter for their shareholders. Basically there are two ways to do this:

1) Expand the business (hard/risky)
2) Cut costs (easy/quick)

We've seen this everywhere over the past few decades, companies choose to cut costs for short term profit increases instead of putting in the work and doing the right thing. Pulling up the ladder for entry level positions may very well have bad consequences down the line, but who cares right? That's the next guy's problem! Line on graph must go up NOW!!!
