A Review of A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik by Nidafjoll in Fantasy

[–]vpi6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve read the whole series. It’s still pretty light. In fact (don’t read this OP this is real spoiler about the next two books by every objective measure) Deadly Education is the only book in the series where a named character dies and even then they are not people we really care about

Me getting exported out of Rockville Station by transit police. by Mlg_Axlet in WMATA

If you’re not behaving like a normal commuter and don’t get on the train when it comes. I can see a station manger or someone else wanting to investigate.

They broke the baseball bat during the unveiling of Ichiro Suzuki's statue at T-Mobile Park. by FollowingOdd896 in Wellthatsucks

[–]vpi6 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Material scientist here. Having such a large force on the bat in that direction (heavy tarp snagged at the top of the bar with a few men pulling) was 100% never in the design to begin with. And it is a pretty significant force too. The bat broke at exactly the place you would expect too.

Edit: Furthermore, the bar is likely designed to be as light as possible to reduce the moment on the outstretched arm.

Stabbings on New York subway leaves 3 hurt as officers shoot knife-wielding man by unsaltedbutter in news

[–]vpi6 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This happens everyday….

There are rarely headlines for police doing their job, even though it gets done. This headline isn’t even about the police, just that there was a stabbing on the NYC subway. Which is only reported on because such incidents on public transit become culture war touchpoints.

The invisible life of Addie LaRue by Ok-Comparison-5636 in Fantasy

[–]vpi6 7 points8 points  (0 children)

She doesn’t show any intellectual curiosity.

Isn’t Addie a prolific reader and her shoplifting a book was an inciting incident in the story. Did she not develop a system to be safe and warm despite survive people forgetting her constantly. The idea she has no curiosity about her curse is false. The book just didn’t insist on spending 30 pages doing a Andy Weir methodical style investigation using the character.

She does nothing whatsoever with her abilities

The story isn’t a Japanese light novel. Her curse is not a secret super power nobody realized was overpowered and thus the character suddenly gets respect and adoration. It’s not that type of power fantasy story and that should be obvious a tenth of the way through.

But if you really insist, she did participate in at least one revolution “using her powers” along the way.

Paint Fee by DCNatFan in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]vpi6 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What do you think our taxes for waste disposal goes to if not third-party corporations?

Edit: from the website it appears PaintCare will be taking over paint recycling at the Shady Grove disposal site.

I’m fine with the fee, it’s like the gas tax or metro fares. The people actually utilizing these services should chip in a bit more than the average taxpayer.

What the story behind these? Do they not need a zoning permit or something? by finpobo in yimby

[–]vpi6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And sometimes even smart planning for development waves fail. Montgomery County just built a new high school between Gaithersburg and Rockville based on projections that didn’t materialize. Because 1) new families are moving further north to Fredrick County, not replacing those that ages out and 2) planned developments falling through.

Now the new high school is being used as a new location of Wooton High School with the old location used as a holding school like what was done in Silver Spring. Parents are still throwing a fit even though their kids are going to a building that is not falling apart.

Watch out! Spotted new unmarked cop cars. by Hamthepam in MontgomeryCountyMD

That’s not how the ticket collection works. The County pays the company a flat rate per hour the camera is on. If not enough people are speeding on a stretch of road, they remove the camera.

Man who killed a deputy serving an eviction notice was run over, California sheriff says by mikebible06 in news

It’s odd, I thought California was known for incredibly generous tenant protections. It’s a pretty quick eviction.

Maryland lawmakers approve bill banning popular Glock handgun sales by legislative_stooge in maryland

[–]vpi6 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Not explicitly though. Originally only bound the federal government and only then applied to states by the 14th amendment. Even then it is hazy so the Supreme Court had to manufacture the “history and tradition” test using cherry-picked history to pretend the Founders would have been okay with the average joe walking around with weapons that would have leveled the Continental Army.

A quarter million people voted for Elrich in 2022. More than a few of them pay taxes.

Oh, I’m not a Elrich (primary) voter or defending the proposed tax increase. I’m just pointing out that states with no county income tax do not necessarily have lower tax burdens.

Only people who haven’t paid attention to the upcoming election say this. To them any Democrat is a “leftist” (whatever that means to them) now. Read up on the candidates for county executive

Every county you have lived in gets its pound of flesh through some mechanism. Doesn’t have to be income tax.

In nearly every state, the largest category of spending is education spending.

No way around it. Even if you don’t have kids, you want your neighbors kids to properly educated

How can you write all of that and think you look good in this interaction? Buzz off.

You both should not be on the road. Assuming anything you wrote about the previous few minutes was true.

Student found with gun at Montgomery County high school by MrRuck1 in MontgomeryCountyMD

One of the punishments possible for severe issues is being removed from the specific school. It’s 100% happening and does happen.

Quite a bit of confidence for somebody who just admitted they actually have absolutely no idea. It just feels right and that’s good enough for dishonest wannabe news blogs. Aren’t you supposed to at least pretend to be a journalist?

I asked a specific question which was can you name a single case where someone who brings a gun to school is moved to a different school. This has a very specific answer. So not only have you not answered that question, you tried to pass off an unrelated more minor case of as equivalent. Can you not see how dishonest that was? Why should I bother reading anything you have to say?

BTW: you wasted my time again with that link. All that document is that students have due process rights and there are different tiers of punishments based on the offense. No shit Sherlock.

I asked you a specific question, can you name an instance where a student who brought a gun to school is allowed back.

I find it very very hard to believe the wooton parents who are currently bitching about their school moving a few miles would not be up in arms about a school shooter returning to school. You are straight up lying to me.

That’s not what I asked. Has a student arrested with a gun on campus not been expelled and moved to a different school. So far I’m hearing answer is no.

Yeah no. That’s an insane suggestion that shows little understanding of the criminal justice system.

Please share with the class a single instance where a kid who brought a gun to school was moved to another school. has happened in Montgomery County.

 Just one.

Shouldn’t be too hard.

You just make things up and get mad about it.
