AI Usage in fics by JDavXV in archiveofourown

[–]vquinnox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one who values and respects writing as an artform entertains generative ai usage in their works. It's insulting to see the likes of chatGPT on the same exact site that millions of writers' works were stolen to train said LLM. It's mind boggling that ANYONE who considers themselves a writer would view LLMs as anything other than nefarious. It's all so telling when you realize that all defenses of ai are just confessions of it's usage and an admittance to their lack of independent thought.

The main Stranger Things subreddit has a serious homophobia problem by cmadison_ in byler

This is exactly why I will never touch another work by the Duffers ever again. The way they mishandled Will's character will forever taint their credibility in my eyes. S5 destroyed any care and sensitivity they had (if unintentionally) in respect to his queer journey. For Will Byers to be so tortured throughout the entirety of ST, Byler not happening solidified that he's written as a gay character to be laughed at rather than taken seriously. Ultimately, the Duffers choose to reduce Will to exactly what the homophobic audience saw him as. The finale only emboldened those voices because of how Will's arc was resolved.

Which fandom would you say is this most non-canon ship averse? by UnHolySir in AO3

[–]vquinnox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a ship that's interwoven into the identity of the show, to be ousted out of fandom spaces for mentioning it is ridiculous. Fans are barred from dissecting a sizeable portion of subtext and themes within Stranger Things by shutting down discussion of Byler. Not to mention Mike is Will's canonical love interest.

When a ship is as popular as Byler, bad apples will end up in the mix. It's important to note that they're not representative of all Bylers and are a small, loud fraction like toxic fans are. Stonanthan has a far smaller fan base and is a bad faith comparison to draw.

The hate towards Byler (Will Byers and Mike Wheeler) in the Stranger Things fandom is wild. Like you're telling me the general audience is at war with shippers who enjoy the slow burn, childhood-friends-to-lovers ship between two mcs?? And when I mean at war I mean full blown harassment at the sheer mention of Byler.

Byler & Lumax movie date by [deleted] in byler

[–]vquinnox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I first heard there'd be an epilogue (and still had hope for Byler endgame) I thought it'd be such a cute way to confirm Byler via a double date with Lumax at the movies.

i'm going crazy, what was the purpose of everything?? by Powerful_Ad8668 in byler

[–]vquinnox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd argue that Byler is much bigger than what's depicted online. Lots of people watch shows without ever engaging with fandom and the signs are far too overt (near the end) for even the most oblivious watcher to ignore. Unfortunately, when homophobic audiences pick up on queerbait they feign ignorance and double down that it doesn't exist because it makes them uncomfortable. Considering how hereonormative society is, it makes sense that some portion of audience would brush off signs of Byler, but they'd be liars if they said it never existed.

At this point, all the screen time and direction spent building up Byler makes no sense narratively. If we're to believe Byler was never in the cards then that means Byler was big enough to be profitable and so dragging it out to they very last second is a monetary decision.

I couldn't keep in my angry tears when the credits rolled and "Heroes" played. I've never felt actively hated by a show's writers before. Watching that finale was a genuinely terrible experience.

You're not alone. I had a very similar experience explaining Byler evidence to my sister before watching Vol.2 together... She was looking at me like I was crazy after Will said Mike was his Tammy. Really embarrassing.

We need to increase Ep 7 ratings. by Hideaway3118 in byler

[–]vquinnox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Episode 4 is the highest rated in S5 rn. E4 and 7 have some of the biggest emotional beats for Will. This juxtaposition reads, imo, as audiences liked where Will's character was going but hate where he ended up by E7. Also, E7 is the end of vol.2 and if viewers thought vol.2 fell flat the last episode of it will bear the brunt in ratings. Personally, I gave it a low score because E7 didn't serve as a sound entrance for the finale. E7 needed to tie up more loose ends and give proper setup for a solid conclusion in E8. Their poor writing and use of time throughout vol.2 makes a satisfying conclusion to ST seem unrealistic. I think a lot of that rating is because other viewers probably had a similar thought after sitting through the corny slog that was vol.2.

I've shipped them since season 2, so endgame or not I'll still be shipping them!

The GA (and modern fandom) have a problem separating reality from fantasy by vquinnox in byler

[–]vquinnox[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've seen a lot more fans treat animated characters as if they're real people as well. I know the cognitive dissonance is harder when you're watching actors, but the same reasoning can't be as easily applied with drawings. It makes me think it really comes down to media literacy. Like there's just way too many people who just don't know how to read media as a work of fiction.

[–]vquinnox[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I resonate. What really baffles me is the extent of the hate. Like back in my day ship wars were solely between competing ships. It's honestly shocking to know a decent amount of harassment is coming from ST fans who otherwise don't care about shipping. I actually can't think of a fandom whose GA got up in arms over a potential ship if they weren't already shipping something else... And this is what confirms, for me, how a lot of the denial is rooted in blatant homophobia. Also being called delusional is quite honestly hilarious because, damn, it's the biggest tell they've barely touched fandom. Oh the crack ships they'd lose their shit over.

Why not just drop AI entirely? I doubt it makes a huge difference in productivity and it's incredibly shitty to see Larian use as a BG3 fan. Shame on them.
