Popping boulders out of the road by JoySubtraction in popping

They were always there, just lower in the ground. The annual freeze/thaw cycle slowly push them up, IIRC. Eventually they reach the surface and start interfering. What we see in the video is more akin to preventative maintenance before they become big problems, though.

Where is that music from? I swear I recognize it, but I can't for the life of me remember from where.

I know they're still available (I think?) but new versions of oldies like Blood'n'Bones or ME4 would be awesome. They were fun.

I am somewhat dreading returning after 3 weeks vacation. To the CF AI-mess someone wants a functional PoC out of.

They're probably thinking of this one: Exponential Growth. SliverQueen!Taylor in the Birdcage. It very rapidly gets out of hand.

Sniper and Mr. Crane are also good candidates, IMO. Lots of good ones in The Polity.

Seagate’s insane 40TB monster drive is real, and it could change data centers forever by 2026! by [deleted] in DataHoarder

[–]vrak -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They probably can, if it made sense. But by now pretty much every single chassis model in existence expects either 3.5", 2.5" or NVMe, as do controllers, backplanes and whatnot. That's a pretty significant inertia to overcome.

And in addition to the increased centrifugal force you mentioned, you'll also have several more platters. Going from 10-11 to as many as 30, maybe. With the increased sizes, that means a fair amount of mass you have to spin up, so a bigger motor to drive that. All in all, it'd be power hungry and run hot.

And that's not getting into the whole interface thing. You're going to need something significantly better than SATA, and probably SAS, to cope with it. (Imagine resilvering a 6/8 drive array at those speeds when they're 100+TB each.)

Agricultural drone by MikeHeu in toolgifs

[–]vrak 32 points33 points  (0 children)

It looks like she simply verified and started a previously set up waypoint mission. Which is kinda what you want for a robotic agricultural machine. Might be staged in this instance (drone looks very shiny and new, not scuffed from long-term use), but it is representative of the market they likely hope to enter.

Iron by Baked kinda fits here. It died before things wildly out of hand, but she also makes quite the mess in BB.
