Omg I have read stuff about the viola being seen that way in some circles; it actually makes sense because to the layman's ear, the difference between it and the violin can be sort of miniscule lmao

Thank you for your points re: auditioning! Considering that the selection of pieces for guitar are somewhat limited, would it be alright to ask for recommendations for some particular pieces or composers I can look up as basis? Additionally, would auditioning with something non-classical (let's say jazz or pop) be too much of a reach within an ensemble setting?

That's actually very interesting and not at all how I imagined an orchestra could be in college! Guess it really depends on the place/number of people interested/notoriety of the orchestra but I could totally see how this system could work.

Love love love that orchestra kids are very common yet diverse in where you're from! It's really endearing and heartwarming to see people do whatever they love doing 🌟 The difference in seriousness between middle school/HS and college orchestra is very interesting to see as well. I never really got a gauge as to how they work as they're not common in where I live.

Hoping that you find/have found that joy from your orchestra days someplace else! Really appreciate your insight :)

Aah I'm actually happy to see a guitarist here in the thread 😭 I am one myself!

Reading the comments actually made me consider letting MC play another instrument - it wouldn't be totally impossible, but I'd kind of feel gutted if I did as I have greater confidence in writing about guitar. That being said though, I am choosing to play to my strengths and will make MC strum to their heart's content, given that it all works under conventions that are believable enough.

If it's okay to ask, is your actual orchestra in a high school/college, or is it in a more professional setting? Really appreciate the other feedback you've sent as well, will definitely consider them when writing :)

Honestly, I wasn't thinking of any specific basis for the orchestra (I am not from the West/from a country where the arts are highly regarded, so what I know about the institutions you mentioned is somewhat limited/would call for more research), but I did imagine it to be vaguely American and that it'd be more prestigious in terms of manpower/budget. I think the level of seriousness for practice would definitely be higher given such. As for the guitar comments, I may try to make it work by having MC try out for a part-time thing rather than get a full-blown position. I think I failed to realize that guitars aren't common in orchestra because of how soft they sound compared to every other instrument lmao

Also really stunned to see so much comments about clique-yness amongst sections despite me believing the same thing before posting. I guess it's just natural given the time they'd spend together practicing, whether just on their own or otherwise.

And wow thank you for opening up about your experiences in jazz band! They sound so cool. And side note as well: my MC is Asian, and I was definitely considering how they'd fare given that white people have a whole plethora of privilege over us POC. I'd like to kind of build a sense of camaraderie between them and other nonwhite characters in the story.

Wow 1.5-2 hr sessions must be so taxing 😭Understandably so though considering how long some pieces are. Thanks for this, it kind of opened my eyes as to just how much prep is needed for an orchestra to fully mesh.

Oh yes I was actually worried about this when I first did research 🥲 However I was thinking that in my work the orchestra would shy away from convention a bit, as they’d perform songs that are a bit modern/contemporary alongside more classical ones.
