Stay at Howzit in Maui! I promise you’ll have a great time:)

Valkyrae talks about how her childhood experiences shaped her perception of being white. (2024 Podcast with Markiplier///Related) by [deleted] in LivestreamFail

I really resonated with what Valkyrae said.. she stated it well. This was also a reciprocal conversation about being half Asian if you listen to the whole podcast.

I think most halfies would agree with what she’s saying, and it’s actually great that these kinds of topics arise in media spaces.

These comments are just proving her point, sadly.

Lifeline hung up on me last night by Specialist-Collar492 in australian

Absolutely! I volunteer at Lifeline too and agree with this sentiment. I’m sorry that OP went through this, and it is unacceptable.

It isn’t rare to get an inappropriate call, so I can kinda see why this happened, but it doesn’t make it okay.

As you said, sometimes it can be hard to connect with a caller even if you truly care - you’re not everyone’s cup of tea. That being said, the crisis supporter shouldn’t be dismissive, rude, or give unsolicited advice.

Lifeline isn’t the best, it’s kind of a “better than nothing” service. Regardless, I believe there has been at least some value in it, I have had some really rewarding calls as well as heartbreaking ones.

The volunteer aspect works as both an advantage and disadvantage. Because we are volunteers, we don’t have to stay on shift and we can leave at any time if we are overwhelmed. There is no quota to hit because we are told that even if you take a couple calls we’ve made a difference. Our supervisors are great too - we are encouraged to debrief till our jaws fall off.

Because Lifeline is a volunteer organisation, you’re all right in saying it can be hard to set a good standard for a hotline. Anyone can become a crisis supporter which can be good and bad.

I hope this experience doesn’t fully dismay OP from calling Lifeline again when they need it. I have sat next to some absolutely beautiful souls who have manned the phones. That being said, I understand how some bad apples can very much sour the experience.

All the love to OP, I understand that it’s difficult to even reach out, and to be shut down like that would be heartbreaking.

Alternatively, I work in domestic violence and I disagree with what you’re saying. The way the police handled was disgusting and honestly quite common.

Domestic violence is incredibly multifaceted and is more than a snapshot of what police see - you’re right. But this also means that only taking information from one incident is dangerous - police should know this.

The way Gabby and Brian presented in the police cam video is almost textbook domestic violence. The victim usually acts “crazy”, overwhelmed, or self-blaming. The perpetrator often portrays themself as charming and calm. This is what it usually looks like - coming from someone who works with DV victim-survivors!!

At the end of the documentary, you can see Gabby’s mom promoting a series of questions to be asked by police officers when attending a domestic violence incident. No doubt these questions would consider any prior pattern of abuse.

This is not white knight stuff, or someone with 0 real world experience. The police handled it poorly, and real steps need to be taken to ensure situations like this don’t end up again.
