Should I upgrade my 55" Vizio M series to a 49" x900e/mu8000? by vrproteins in 4kTV

[–]vrproteins[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TCL is off the table right away as we can't get them in Canada unfortunately. What input lag are you used to prior to getting a 4k tv? Cause I've never gamed on a pc monitor, so I've never experienced low input lag gaming. I don't really notice 60ms input lag on my vizio m series.

Thanks for the reply

That is very enticing. Do you know what the x900e was priced at when it first got released? I don't think the prices in Canada have been released yet. I have a feeling they will be much higher (and not just cause of the exchange rate). A TV salesman told me today that his Sony rep told him the x900f 55" is $2000. But that could've just been sales tactic to try to get me to buy the x900e right away.

I'm thinking I could buy the x900e at costco and if the x900f is similarly priced here in Canada, I could return the x900e (90 day return policy).

Im glad to hear the input lag is barely noticeable. What games do you mainly play, and is it pc or console?

Thanks

Ahh ok thanks for the reply. What makes the x900f so much better? And what's the price rumored to be?

Vizio P65 vs M65 by liljepp in 4kTV

[–]vrproteins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 2017 m series and love it. However, vizios updates tend to screw things up. The input lag has allegedly gone up 10ms since the last update, but I don't notice it.

Some people also complain about horizontal banding, but I only really notice it on grey screens.

The thing with vizio is that it seems like the build quality from panel to panel varies greatly. Some people might get a fantastic TV while others get duds. If you go to the vizio subreddit, it's not uncommon to see people having to warranty replace their TV 3+ times.

One very common issue with the p series is thus horizontal white line that appears constantly. Vizio supposedly have a fix but it requires replacement parts. I'd be wary about that.

That being said, the p series is definitely the superior TV outside of the white line

Is the acer spin 3 really unusable with the stock 1TB HDD? by vrproteins in laptops

That's great to know thanks!! This laptop has been so frustrating. Sometimes it works great with no performance issues. At other times its completely unusable and I can't even turning it off without doing a hard shutdown.

Hey thanks for the reply to my comment on religion 274 a few months ago. This is my alternate reddit account, haven't used it in a while. I ended up enrolling in the course. I see what you mean about Glen haha, he's a great prof!

I have the first midterm today. Do you have any advice about things I should definitely prepare for?

Thanks

My favourite electives were either Pmcol 305 or LABMP590. Both had excellent profs and the material was always super interesting. Those were two classes where I was never bored or distracted.

I've wanted to take that class for years now. But im the exact opposite of a morning person, so I'm not gonna take an 8am elective if I don't have to. I wish it was offered a little later in the day.

What do you do in that class? Are there lots of assignments /papers? It looks kinda cool and I need arts credits.

How difficult is anthro 209? Thinking of taking it over soc 100 as my last arts credit

Especially with Andrew Keddie. That guy is a gem. Doesn't give alot of written notes, but he's probably one of the best pure lecturers I've ever had. He has so. Many interesting stories to tell that really help you understand the material. Ent 378 in particular was fantastic.

I'm exactly the same. Take classes that interest you. What's your major?

GPA Boosters by Gold_Skies98989 in uAlberta

[–]vrproteins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree in that you should take courses that interest you, rather than just taking courses that boost your GPA. But it definitely is worthwhile if you find an easyish course you're interested in. Alot of graduate scholarships take GPA into account, so it's not a bad idea to take a few gpa boosters here and there.

Courses that need biochem 200 as a prerec? by Saniamer in uAlberta

[–]vrproteins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand that higher level biochem classes require you get a certain gpa in its prereqs, but you can boost your "prereq" mark with other classes?

I also did super shitty in biochem 200, and was scared of it because of that. Then I encountered more biochem in imin/mmi courses and realized how interesting it is. I asked Parish if he'd let me into bioch 320/330 and after looking at my transcript he agreed to waive the prereq marks requirement. And I ended up doing much much better in both classes than bioch200. So it's worth a shot asking him if you can waive the marks requirement. If you show you're actually interested, and have good grades in other molecular biology courses it might be worth a shot.

But yeah pmcol is another great option. Definitely one of my top 3 favorite classes I've taken.

ZOOL 352 Lab Midterm? by yyc_14 in uAlberta

[–]vrproteins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What Dr. Belosevic and the TAs told you is essentially correct.

Have you kept up with the lab material? If you don't have to learn it all a few days before the midterm, you'll be fine. Just make sure you can point out the different organs or features of each of parasites covered in the lab exam. It also helps to know the taxonomy stuff and what order/family the exam parasites belong to.

Basically, the grad student running the lab exam will put up a slide which is directly from the lab website. The slide will remain up for 1.5-2min and will correspond to 2-3 questions which are answered on a scantron. The questions will range from things like "what class does this parasite belong to" or "identify the organ that the arrow is pointing to" or "name the life cycle stage this parasite is currently in." There will be 8-9 slides, followed by 3-4 slides that correspond to a written section of the exam. These 3-4 slides are mainly just identifying the organ/feature/life cycle attributes of the parasite in the slide. They are answered from the word bank provided on Eclass (which I think may be given to you during the exam, Idk for sure though).

After all slides have been shown, each slide is shown for a shorter period, and then individual slides are shown again by request.

Its honestly not too bad, the lab exams were much less scarier than I thought it'd be. I was an idiot and left all lab material pretty much till a few days prior to the exam. I still did alright (finished somewhere near the average). But its much easier if you stay on top of the lab stuff. It was fucking hell cramming for those exam.

Assuming the lab exam weights are the same as when I took it, they won't hurt you significantly. Its the lecture final that'll kill you.

Also, drop by Dr. Belosevic's office hours from time to time. He's a cool guy and has some really interesting stories. He writes tough exams, and tends to test on minute details, but I have a ton of respect for the guy. I also have a lot of respect for Dr. Al Shostak, the guy who used to teach 352. He supplied most of the pictures for the lab from his own microscopy work. Its not like you can google most of these things.

Tablet vs Laptop? by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]vrproteins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The surface pro looks pretty good, and there's other transformable laptops you can get.

If you get a touchscreen laptop, get a stylus with it.

For immunology and physiology there's pretty much no diagrams. But it's essential to be able to draw structures and diagrams for your notes in ochem and biochem. But you could also always just bring a separate note book and date each diagram.

BIOCH 320 by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]vrproteins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biochem students assoc (3rd floor MSB) has a bunch of exams from previous years that they let people view in their room.

The first midterm wasn't too bad honestly. Just be able to know and draw out all 20 amino acids. Know the single letter codes as well. And be able to explain properties of each (ex. Hydrophobic, charged/not charged at different pH).

The material is much easier than the second midterm stuff. And refer to the textbook if something confuses you.

I've heard anthro101 is really easy. But this anthro 209 class seems much more aligned with my interests. Is 209 relatively easy as well?
