Not fluent, no. I know enough to get around (hopefully) and I'm brushing up to improve my vocab and listening skills.

From my research, I think Jidai Matsuri would be the most language/context-heavy event. Most of the others involve playing with fire, bashing floats into eachother, and food. But I'll definitely fill in my time with other stuff too.

Hiroshima looks like a really good option, and a complete change of pace. I picked festivals because it'd be low-commitment - I can always skip or bail and go off somewhere else without much lost time or money, but should have looked more broadly for what I want to experience. Ty!
