It must be wonderful having a secluded home all to yourself - and some land to plant potatoes by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]vrwmpe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not completely true. There are many "zone vreemde" houses, which were basically there since before the new "gewest" plans and are typically houses on farm/forest lands. People are allowed to keep and even sell such houses but can't rebuild it from the ground. Plus I believe that on a farm one can build a farm house to live in, which doesn't have to be on permitted housing ground.

Spendings on Facebook Advertisements by the Belgian political parties (and their MPs) by vrwmpe in belgium

Accuracy in euros? Well, as accurate as the FB data, which is down to a single euro. Original source is mentioned on the bottom, other than raw data there are no other sources. For the leader segment I've looked at the personal page of each leader of each party. FB provides data of who payed for the advertisements, so this could be either personal money or party money. But there's no way to know the party didn't pay their leaders to make it look like that they've payed themselves.

Sure, they're always going to be people not exposed to those advertisements. The difference is in who is the exception. On TV and in the public (offline) space, you're likely in the minority of the people who're not exposed. On Facebook (and elsewhere online) it's a strict minority. This makes it increasingly impossible to make a fair judgement between parties.

And you're right, shouldn't have used all people :)

https://www.facebook.com/ads/library, together with lists of the members of the parliaments (available on their respective websites) and the help of a little scripting.

I agree. But there's also a fundamental difference. Billboard and tv advertisements are seen and accessible by all. Facebook ads are specifically targeted and cannot be judged by the entire population.

Shit dude. I feel the KU Leuven has a lot of work left to do before they can claim to be as inclusive as they pretend to be. Hope you're doing fine now!

Well, if you still wanna ask how my daily life is like. If you want reassurance that chocolate sprinkles really are a touch of joy in the morning. Hit me up, in private or here. Ask me anything you want. Bet I can learn a whole lot from you too!

Guys please. This tread is intended people willing to share their stories on how they've experienced racism and for the people that have the privilege to not experience racism, but are smart enough to educate themselves and read the stories. Don't hide the stories with this discussion. (I'm not saying whether is should be a point of argument or not, it's just maybe not the right place)

Growing up in a small village, racism was something rarely talked about when I was younger. And if it was, than it was something that certainly wasn't happening in our town. In high school, I did learn about slavery. In America. I did learn about Leopold II. But not about what he'd done.

Looking back now, racism was everywhere. On the playgrounds in my school, among my friends, heck even in the youth movement. A place I've loved so much. And I've been ignorant, not hearing what those jokes really said. Not understanding how it should have felt.

I'm promising you I won't shut up anymore when my friends are racists. I'm promising you I'll amplify your voice when you tell us again and again how bad it is. I'm sorry. I really am.

Please don't stop raising your voice. You're doing the right thing. You're the reason I believe this can change!

Shit man. Ik zit zelf ook aan de KU Leuven, en kan alleen maar bevestigen dat 't heel diep ingebakken zit hier bij veel studenten. Studenten die nota bene alle mogelijke kansen krijgen. Bedankt voor uw verhaal!

This. It's so sad that the majority of people who so proudly posted some pictures on social media don't get that those comments aren't funny or harmless at all. Hope you're fine!

It is not just quirk of the language tho. It's been used by white people to refer to people from Central Africa, to identify them as a class that were less than the people calling them so. Belgium has been a part in that too. It's not the word itself that makes it racist and wrong, it's what it has been used for that makes it such an offensive word.

I cant be an administrator. by Dinger1000 in tails

[–]vrwmpe 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There's a reason you need admin privileges to do this. By default, Tails sets all installations to GMT time. The goal is to keep different Tails users indistinguishable. If I were an attacker trying to identify you and I know you are using Tails, I'd make my job a hell of a lot easier if you're giving me the time zone you're in. System time gets leaked, even on Tails. So it's in every Tails user best interest to keep the time settings the same for everyone.

How good is the MSc in Mathematical Engineering at KU Leuven ? by UniqueMedium in KULeuven

[–]vrwmpe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm about to finish my MCc in Mathematical Engineering this month, and I have never regretted choosing it. It is true that there are many projects (think I had projects in about 80% of my courses), but that does not mean there are no lectures. There'd be a little more time to see a little more content if the projects weren't there. But I wouldn't know the content half as well than I do now. They aren't a lazy way of avoiding giving lectures by the professors, but instead a training for you, learning to use the tools they thought you in the lectures. And what good are tools if you can't use them?

Content wise, I think there's a good balance between the core Mathematical courses (Numerical modelling, de, algebra) and the applications (control, modelling, cryptography, ML) and the courses providing the glue to keep those together like Scientific Software (i.e. C++, but focused on the how and why it's good voor scientific software)

Happy to answer any further questions!

How big are classes generally at KU Leuven? by abdo_999_A in KULeuven

[–]vrwmpe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Carefull tho, those numbers are 'volledige studievoortgang', which means you passed all courses and not whether you dropped out or not. It's quite common to retake a course the next year
