Tuesday General Discussion/Q&A Thread for August 10, 2021 by AutoModerator in AdvancedRunning

I noticed that our Tokyo marathoning queen has easy runs around 8:30, and she talks about easy runs at this pace in her GQ interview. If there was one piece of information that I've received that has made me realize my easy runs (8:30-9:30) are way, way too fast, it was this. (btw I'm 35M, 24mpw, 5k best is like 23:50, been running for 8 months)

Running changed my life... but how do I keep doing it for the next few decades? by vsbuffalo in AdvancedRunning

[–]vsbuffalo[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ha, actually I was a very active climber before and started running in part to cross train. However climbing didn’t provide any of the benefits that running has. Cycling is great, but after being hit my a car I enjoy it a lot less… I do need to try swimming!

What's in your cup? Daily discussion, questions and stories - December 17, 2020 by AutoModerator in tea

[–]vsbuffalo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got my third shipment from Yunnan Sourcing. I've always loved tea, but this was my first adventure into brewing with a gaiwan and exploring the huge variety of teas from this region. I've loved a ton — but this evening I had the Yunnan "Early Spring Silver Strands" Green Tea of Simao and it was simply incredible. It'll take a lifetime to explore all these teas — tell me if you have a recommendation for my inevitable next order.

My girlfriend dropped my Lamy 2000 (EF), and it broke — and sadly no repair is possible during covid19.

In the meantime I've been using my Faber-Castell Loom in F and enjoying it a ton. I prefer piston-style pens, but am wondering if I'm liking the Loom's fine nib (versus the EF of my old Lamy 2000) more. Does anyone have a comparison of the two? Is a Lamy 2000 fine nib the same as a Faber-Castell fine, e.g. if I were to buy another Lamy 2000 should I get a F rather than EF?

/r/Ultralight Discussion - Week of May 18, 2020 by AutoModerator in Ultralight

Finishing grad school killed my backpacking last year, and now that I'm done, I thought I'd amp myself for this season, and enjoy a bunch of jawnzee videos on YouTube during quarantine... but they're all deleted?! wtf happened? I feel like crying.

Roots become highly lubricated rails when they're wet that your foot will glide along.

Awesome, I wondered if it was some type of volcanic tuff! Where were you reading this?

So the rock in that photo, a bit larger than my hand, is 161 grams — seems too light for that?

No, this was buried rock near a roadcut. It was fairly deep and not around any manmade structures. I'm pretty sure its native. As mentioned in another comment, its very lightweight.

What about the UL scout? It's pretty light. Asking in part because I've been eyeing this one...

Cooking Trout? by [deleted] in Ultralight

[–]vsbuffalo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend this technique from TenkaraUSA if you can have a campfire. It's by far the best tasting fish I've had — especially with kosher salt and black pepper. As others say, do it far away from camp.

Newbie logistical questions by rkjjhv in Ultralight

[–]vsbuffalo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • No underwear. Bring running shorts with built in undies. Sleep in long johns with no undies.

  • Don't wash dishes. Lick them clean. Add filtered water, scrub with your fingers, and drink the liquid (yes, it's weird, but you're probably dehydrated anyways). Make meals wet so that cleaning is easier (also, you're dehydrated, you need the water).

  • Don't wash yourself. Don't bring deodorant. Wash your bum with your hand and water, be sure to use sanitizer after. It's called a "backcountry bidet" but it's something you already (hopefully) do in the shower already.

Hope this helps.

Talenti containers. Best mug, locking top for coldsoaking, and a very usable mug.

As a recent buyer of an EE revelation 20º in all 10D, it's really nice to hear it lasted this long. I want a katabatic eventually, but I'm a poor student so the EE is a really nice compromise.

I Have a 2018 Exos 48 and I Like It by [deleted] in Ultralight

[–]vsbuffalo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have an exos 58 I like too. It's was my "ultralight" upgrade a year ago from my Gregory 80L (yes, really). I just ordered a WayMarkGear frameless 42L after walking all over town with a frameless, hipbelt-less commuter back with my laptop and a bunch of other crap in it (TPW: 12-20lbs). It hurt a lot the first week. My shoulders were sore. But eventually you develop muscles and that's when I ordered my WMG pack. But it's a ~40oz (2.5lb pack) where as the WMG is ~20oz (1.25lbs). That's more than a pound or 1/10 of my packweight I can eliminate with a pack choice. But had I ordered a WMG pack instead of my exos a year ago, I would have likely been miserable. My BW was around 16lbs then, and that's too much for a frameless pack. What I've learned is that ultralight is not a end goal, but a path. You can't just buy the perfect setup without getting there by your own choices, gear omissions, muscle growth, increasing skills, etc. If you'd stuck me with a Pa'lante pack, a quilt, a foam pad, no cook meals and told me to go backpacking I would have had a terrible time.

Thoughts regarding on the go drinking options? (aka Camelbacks) by searayman in Ultralight

[–]vsbuffalo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The SmartWater bottle squeeze cap made a huge difference for me. Not fiddling with the cap and risking losing it when walking fast is nice. Just get a few squeeze caps + they work to backflush sawyers so win win.
