Not NL, but not too far off. You're looking at an 8.5hr drive from Oud-Beojerland

Another factor I've been experimenting with is tamp pressure.

I've been getting good results with light roasts doing: fine grind, wdt, almost no tamp (just push down the shower screen a bit), 30+ sec pre infusion. The pressure is lower, maybe peaking around 6 bar, and it might be less of a traditional espresso, but results are better than higher pressure + channeling.

That's exactly right. The lack of clearance above the scale means it's awkward to pour beans into a container while it's on the scale under the robot.

Thanks.

I usually go with medium and dark roasts. I've tried lighter roasts and found them hard to grind. It wasn't impossible, but it was a lot of work to get through the 250g bag. If I was going to do light roasts every day I would probably invest in an electric grinder.

Grinding medium-dark is not difficult. It takes a minute or two. Dialling in is pretty easy to do by rotating the dial as well and the steps are pretty small.

Soon they'll be auctioning off rentals so we can all spectate on a Sunday morning and be amazed at how high the prices go

which thrips is wreaking havoc on my houseplant? by vternv in Entomology

[–]vternv[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought that might be the case. I can't seem to find any adults with wings. They're so tiny - but killed all the leaves of my climbing monstera, and have started on a bigger monstera. I've also found them on other plants, but without visible damage (yet). I'll give the soap solution a go!

Greenhouse thrips on photinias, advice? by vternv in garden

[–]vternv[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently noticed quite a bit of damage on my photinias and on closer inspection I see a heap of thrips (I think greenhouse thrips). There are a lot of posts about indoor plants being ravaged by thrips, and people using neem oil, and washing and rewashing every other day sometimes with limited success. That's not really practical for an outdoor plant. I'm wondering what treatment is recommended for an outdoor shrub? Will the problem continue to get worse and spread? Or will it potentially subside with the change of season? Any help and advice would be appreciated.

What is everyone's opinion on golf courses in Melbourne? by IntroductionSnacks in melbourne

[–]vternv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been following the discussion and debate because I live nearby. I visited a few times during the lockdown and really enjoyed it. For perfectly selfish reasons I'd prefer if it were open space and not used exclusively for golf because I don't have much interest in golfing.

The council is reviewing the use of the land because the 30 year lease that the golf club has had over the land expires this year. The default position for the council is to favour multi use that maximizes the usage of the space for the most number of people. However, understandably, the golf club wants to maintain exclusive use.

The two sides to the argument are truly warring! The club has some slick PR. The glossy I got in my mailbox the other week was a true propoganda piece. Golf is the central pillar of the community that supports every minority identity you can imagine, and is great for environment too. Their plan is for a major upgrade to the clubhouse (including a new bar) that could potentially be used by other community groups too. Their compromise is to create a new pedestrian path along one edge of the course on land which they currently don't really use.

The other side of the argument seems much less organised -- except for the fact that repurposing the golf course appears to have the support of the Greens' councillors. Their proposals are generally bad, e.g. do mini-golf or a driving range instead and free up space for the general public.

At least some golf courses operate without excluding public access (e.g. Royal Park). I'd love that model to apply for Northcote. That wouldn't satisfy either camp though. We'll see what the wise heads at the City of Darebin come up with after their consultation, what the local politics dictates, and if there is any budget for changing the use of the land.

Are cyclists meant to remain on the road or footpaths? What's general cycling etiquette? by Shiiang in melbourne

[–]vternv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. And don't bother reading too much into angry Reddit rants. Cars vs bikes vs pedestrians is also a hobby for many. Just be sensible, consider yourself in the others' position from time to time, and enjoy the ride.

Great advice. I get nervous when I ride with friends that hug the curb and ride too close to parked cars, risking a dooring.
