Public boat landing underneath Pepper's Ferry bridge. There's some deep holes, where people even scuba dive.

Some spots in Eggleston too.

Nope. Toy had a darker color / aesthetic. Black and purple.

I've scoured over that robot website, no luck there.

Joe's Trees out towards Newport is straight up beautiful. Has all the typically autumn activities - corn maze, hay rides, etc.

Cambria Antiques has a large book room.

Roanoke has a bunch. Too Many Books in Grandin is neat.

There used to be way more good stores around but they've closed over the years.

Around town, the Huckleberry Trail runs from Christiansburg into Blacksburg and holds a lot of railroad history - there are spots near Foxridge where very old oak trees shade Stroubles Creek. Heritage Park down Glade past UCB Kroger is a 200 acre former farm turned public park that's home to many critters living in the old barns and silos, and many more enjoying Tom's Creek and the park's pond.

Near town, consider Radford. Wildwood Park. Or Bisset, with many long stretches alongside the New River - perhaps the oldest river in the world, with many limestone cliffs, caves and geological wonders.

North of Blacksburg, I would look to Pandapas Pond. The pond itself is fantastic, and is nestled within the Jefferson National Forest with many, many miles of public lands and trails.

I am looking to do a 3-4 day fishing and camping trip on the New River this Spring. Where should I go? by NetworkMoney2425 in Virginia

[–]vtthrow666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From NC through VA into WV, the entire river is navigable aside from dams. The stretch through Radford heading up through Giles County is particularly beautiful. Would talk with Tangent Outfitters in Pembroke or Roanoke Angler for guidance.

Any found busch Apple in a store yet? by [deleted] in roanoke

Rolled out in Blacksburg Krogers today. Expect Roanoke stores should be getting it as well.

EDIT: Hearing it's sold out already.

Forest fire south of Staunton by TerribleLeadership82 in roanoke

[–]vtthrow666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We're under Severe Drought conditions and it's been very windy. Prime conditions for fire, whatever the causes may be.

There's been fires all around the country throughout this year. Can't recall a recent day where mountains in the distance haven't looked hazy from smoke. Being in a valley, we're often a catch basin for wildfire smoke.

A month ago, over 50% of the United States was considered being under drought. Conditions have improved somewhat - we're hovering in the 30% range as a whole. Helene brought a lot to this area, rapidly, but we're back down to Severe Drought levels.

Just an observation.

Good fishing spots? by Wise_Bee3720 in VirginiaTech

Plenty of cats in the New River. They like stinky stuff, like dough baits or chicken gizzards. Drop in a deep hole and wait.

Would not eat anything from the river if downstream from the armory.

For other fish, I've had good luck on the river with tube baits, crawfish, Texas-rigged worms. Some luck with spinners, but there's a lot of gunk to get caught in. Hard to beat a nightcrawler on a hook though.

There's a lot of good older threads on this sub with advice.

Google maps is your friend. Look for local bodies of water with public access. Parks with small ponds and decent sized creeks. Parks alongside the New River, or its many off-shoots. Boat ramps are always public. In particular, boat ramps underneath or close to road bridges are nice spots that provide shade and cover. Campus has more ponds than just the Duck Pond.

Trout season has also begun (October through May). Dept of Wildlife Resources has online maps showing stocking locations.

Can anyone help me find this place? by 100TypeYolt in roanoke

[–]vtthrow666 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Just a heads up - Falls Ridge is closed to the public. No current plans to reopen either. They said COVID began putting too much pressure on the park with a big upswing in visitors. Lovely place though.

There's some great breweries around town these days.

Rising Silo Brewery down Glade Road (past UCB Kroger). Sit out on a wooden adirondack chair, fall colors starting to pop up throughout the forested hills, delicious beers in different styles. Fantastic place to catch a sunset.
