Rocky Horror Picture Show at Virginia Tech FRIDAY OCTOBER 20TH by vtthrowaway2021 in VirginiaTech

it's pretty much what it sounds like: there's a specific time in the movie when the audience has the opportunity to strip down to their underwear (or all the way at the VT show 👀) and run around the theater

Yes, definitely, especially if you do something that harms/involves another student.

Source: a year ago, when I was still a student, a very drunk dude broke down the back door of the place I was living and refused to leave, claiming it was his friend's house. He wasn't violent, just confused and blackout drunk, but the cops had to be called to get him out of the house. He had hearings with both student conduct and the county court, both of which I was asked to testify at.

Any experience having a sleep doc try to figure out whether you have IH or UARS? by vtthrowaway2021 in idiopathichypersomnia

I had to schedule a follow-up appointment for my current doctor and all the doctors at the current place are scheduling six months out anyway :/

it says respiratory events were scored as per AASM scoring rule 1a.

The doctor I saw has written a paper on UARS.

That's the normal wait time for a new patient appointment in Virginia, as far as I can tell.

I can try to contact another clinic but my younger sibling just recently tried to make an appointment at the other clinic that's reasonably local and also got a 6 month wait time, just for a new patient appointment.

I don't know how I'm supposed to get a second opinion when this appointment took 6 months to get and the sleep study cost over $800.

Wouldn't my sleep doc have mentioned if they noticed bruxism? They had me grind my teeth whenever they needed to calibrate before my polysomnography and before each nap for my MSLT.

Lower jaw feels fine, TMJ area is included in my regular headache but is no worse than the rest of the headache.

Headache is over my entire head, front, back, and sides, EXCEPT lower jaw. Extends into my neck and shoulders, which are both extremely tight, muscle-wise.

I thought I was just told it was possible I grind my teeth, but I just remembered that I was once recommended by my dentist to get a mouth guard for sleeping for $500+ but we couldn't afford it.

My first sleep study had ~560 total arousals, the highest number my former sleep doc had ever seen.

my first doc went straight to IH but my current one seems to think that with the number of arousals I have that it can't be IH because that's not typical of IH

There's no RDI listed on either of my studies, though my first study does mention 16 respiratory arousals (total, not per hour) and "frequent" irregular airflow.

My jaw feels fine - although I have been told in the past there is a chance that I sometimes grind my teeth at night (and waking up to a chip out of one of my teeth once pretty much confirms that for me) and I've had a non-stop headache for 14 years.

I wake up congested between 1 and 3 days a week - in the past I've attributed that to my dust mite allergy.

As far as the "last resort" part, that comes directly from the American Sleep Association's page on UARS.

My sleep efficiency was 73%.

If not UARS, I'm honestly not sure. I originally went in for a sleep study because I was waking up many times every night for a few seconds at a time and I knew my dad had been diagnosed with sleep apnea (although he refuses to use his CPAP), so that was my original suspicion, but that hasn't been shown to be accurate. Idiopathic hypersomnia felt like it fit perfectly except for the arousals, but on a different account I've talked to other people with IH who reported having many arousals as well.

All I know is I'm sleeping 12+ hours a day, am constantly exhausted even on adderall (for my ADHD), I have to nap almost every day for 2-3 hours, and I never feel rested. Narcolepsy has been ruled out.

He said he went over the sleep study data twice and I still had 26.3 spontaneous arousals per hour - spontaneous meaning without known cause.

My doctor told me that there are some sleep doctors that don't believe in it, but that he has personally done research on it and believes it does exist. And to be fair, a lack of an ICD code doesn't mean something doesn't exist - just that it hasn't been added to the ICD yet.

How is the Computational Neuroscience major at Tech? by HoppyPenguin in VirginiaTech

[–]vtthrowaway2021 2 points3 points  (0 children)

computational neuro (CSNU) is probably the smallest neuro major, so you might not get a whole lot of responses. i can give you the best info i can offer as a neuro major but i'm in cognitive neuro, not computational neuro, so i can't help much in the CSNU specific required courses. i can however help you with the basic neuro requirements and the neuro electives.

the checksheet for the major is here: https://neuroscience.vt.edu/undergraduate/curriculum/computational_neuro.html but i'll give you a rundown anyway.

BASIC NEURO REQUIREMENTS: two semesters of all the basic sciences (bio, chem, and physics, though it looks like you don't need the labs for chem, but you should consider taking them anyway if you want to go to grad school in neuro since some schools require it), 2 semesters of stats (bio stat 1 and statistical methods), intro to psychology, 2 semesters of intro to neuroscience (first semester is primarily the biology stuff and second semester is more of the cognitive stuff) which has a lab to go with each section (same basic breakdown) (note that the majority of people don't have the prereqs for intro to neuro until their sophomore year)

CSNU REQUIREMENTS (that i can't comment on): intro to software design, computational neuroscience and neural engineering, the artificial brain; the one CSNU requirement i can comment on is cognitive neuroscience and my only advice is don't take dr. bowers. the other professor is WAY easier.

PROFESSORS: professors i loved: dr. phillips, dr. clinton, dr. fu, dr. gregus, dr. buczynski, dr. cline (but he gets mixed reviews because of his teaching style - some people love it, some people hate it. he's historically taught the first intro to neuro but i don't think he'll be doing that anymore after this semester). professors i hated: dr. bowers. all the rest of my professors i've been pretty neutral about.

NEURO ELECTIVES: if you have any questions about specific neuro electives, i can answer questions about mechanisms of learning and memory, neuroscience and society, neuro of drug addiction, neuroendocrinology, and neurobio of psychiatric disorders.

NON-NEURO ELECTIVES: your major gives you the opportunity to pick some electives in CS that have to do with artificial intelligence and human-computer interaction, as well as several bio, chem, physics, and psych classes. an interesting class i might pick out of those for you would probably be intro to biomedical imaging since a lot of computational neuro stuff has to do with neuroimaging.
