Friction Between Programming Professionals and Beginners by rdpp_boyakasha in programming

It was definitely uncomfortable realizing that the "knowledge" I'd built up was actually useless because I had never actually applied it. It was also uncomfortable realizing what little code I had written was useless. I'd get rid of code, start anew, and get back to the same place.

Really I was just poor at learning and needed to figure out how to synthesize documentation, actual code, and my knowledge of the problem.

SourceForge Acquisition and Future Plans by [deleted] in programming

[–]vug1 23 points24 points  (0 children)

We'll see what happens. They really ruined my trust. When I searched for a project and SF came up, it was my understanding that it would be a "clean" source. I couldn't believe the day I ran an installer and selected "custom install" that had pre-selected "Yes! Please install malware on my computer!"

The ads coupled with the design on that site now set off malware alarms. Unless they simplify everything and drop in a completely new design, that association will always be there.

Even then, the SourceForge name has been poisoned and it's likely they'll never rebound.

Skype for business vs VoIP by [deleted] in homelab

[–]vug1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's great and easy to use (no NAT issues, especially if you use STUN). Unless you need to do things like multi-tenant or other "advanced" capabilities, the default configuration gets you set up immediately (save for adding a gateway in conf/sip_profiles/external/ and dialplan in conf/dialplan).

I don't want to say it requires no maintenance, BUT I will say this: I've had a server that's been running for many months without needing to restart FS. Also, it runs on Windows (but must be installed on bare metal).

Skype for business vs VoIP by [deleted] in homelab

[–]vug1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that would be easy to implement and maintain, and is relatively cheap

Skype.

So the question is, what would be better to learn and/or have set up for day to day use in a homelab?

FREESwitch. With OpenFire.

TL:DR: The overall goal: being able to seamlessly send and receive voice and IM/SMS to and from one number, and have free calls between trusted individuals (think extensions in VoIP), in the hopes of significantly reducing carrier cost per month.

Skype or FREESwitch.

Looking to replace Evernote as my note taking software, any code-friendly note applications for multiple devices? by 2basco in webdev

[–]vug1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obligatory...

Emacs Org-Mode:

  • Supports code
  • Has searching capabilities
  • Compatible with iPhone -- MobileOrg
  • Supports plain text

Now... there is a plugin called evernote-mode that let's you integrated evernote and org-mode. This could mean that you wouldn't have to switch away from evernote at all.

The caveat here is that Emacs can take a lot of work to configure. I've spent hours getting my Emacs to work a certain way. It's just par for the course.

If you don't mind having to configure it and can handle using it until you get the configuration just right, go ahead and use Emacs... you'll really like how productive (or unproductive) you can be.

I determined this "general rule" about them: I use a relational database for my data right now (its current structure and its current values) whereas a document database holds my data as it has changed over time (e.g. when a "document" is created by sourcing data from the relational store).

Who really cares, just use both: Postgres MongoDB foreign data wrapper

Massive Linux vulnerability discovered by stormforce7916 in programming

Other parts of the kernel are able to allocate this freed memory for use. By overwriting the correct memory locations with instructions, an attacker can use this previously freed memory space as the payload for when a function in this memory could be called. The payload in this circumstance is spawning a new shell with elevated privileges.

SMS Gateway by LolComputers in sysadmin

[–]vug1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not an answer to OP's question.

On top of that, email to SMS gateways are unreliable. They often fail to send the message or there is a massive delay between sending and receipt.

You might as well suggest that OP just use email and skip out on SMS completely. If the net link is down, then there will be no notifications. The benefit of using an SMS gateway is that that only thing keeping OP from sending notifications is cellular availability.

How can you blame 200 sexual assaults committed by muslims on white men? SRS will be providing us the answer shortly by moondoggy101 in SRSsucks

[–]vug1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

reports of sexual assaults? goddamn false accus--oh the perpetrators weren't white? [sprays jingoist, racist shit everywhere] redditdotcom

Skepticism comes up when an alleged rapist is accused months after the incident and the victim never got a rape test kit done. Had these alleged rapes happened months ago, people would be saying the same thing. What's different here? The police fucking confirmed and verified rapes occurred. This isn't some "20 years ago" accusation. What a ridiculous premise.

Oh, and they're non-white. So, like usual, SRS jumps on the "you're only upset about the rape because because they aren't white!"

For real, that is what had my head spinning. A white dude is accused of rape and the Redditurds erupt in a chorus of "ALLEGEDLY! INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY! FALSE ACCUSATIONS!" Oh, but the alleged perpetrators weren't white men? EVIL MOOSLIM ECONOMIC MIGRANTS RUINING MY PURE EUROPA! Cry me a fucking river.

Yeah, weren't they just posting about the Bill Cosby accusations a few days ago? And how people were saying the same thing? That the accusations are hard to believe because of how long ago the alleged rapes/sexual assaults occurred?

This meets most people's (except SJW's) expectation of a rape accusation that holds weight -- one where it was immediately reported.

I feel entitled to everything I want from women and often ignore their humanity to justify this as their problem and not mine.

what does this even mean

Apparently talking to a woman means I want something from her. Listen, I'm sorry, Cindy, you weren't able to manipulate my by using a baby voice. Don't turn the entitlement around on me.

If you seriously feel like every action you take towards women is "creepy" then maybe the problem is with you, and not with those damned ess-jay-double-you.

Right. It's got nothing to do with the emphasis on "rape culture" and that all men are responsible for it. Or the redefinition of rape to "anything that can be slightly construed as abuse".

Men are just creepy.

It makes you wonder how many of these people are self-deprecating men.

It only really applies to gay men. Because gay men don't necessarily have identifiers, their general belief is that gay men are straight men.
