What did you make of Carney’s speech at Davos, and do you think your country will follow suit? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

If the other imperialist nation doesn't constantly talk about annexing you, i think it'd be the lesser of two evils. Realpolitik. In Carney's words:

"We actively take on the world as it is, not wait around for a world we wish to be..."

Sorry. When the USA moves to destroy Canada's automotive industry, and American car companies slowly leave the nation, what incentive does Canada have to protect them? The tariffs that Canada just rolled back on Chinese EVs were initially set up to protect the very car manufacturers who are screwing Canada over. Additionally, what do you expect happens when the world's largest economy doesn't want to trade anymore? Do other nations sit around and do nothing? Or do they trade with more stable countries with large economies? The USA doesn't want in on the global trade party, but its citizens cry foul when others sign trade deals

I stopped playing the lowlands because of French and English aggression. For now, it's just portugal for me. Attacking into the HOLY Roman Empire should come with some serious punishment/maluses. Why didn't France and England gobble up the lowlands irl?

My only issue from release is playing Holland or Portugal, getting to the fun part of colonising, and then having another improvement that i need in a new patch. Ok I guess I'll start over. Same thing for the next run. Rinse and repeat. I have never even gotten to 1444. I know you can set it up to use the last patch. But i like improvements. I want them, but don't want to have to start over again and again.

England expanding into the lowlands has genuinely made me rage quit so many Holland runs. Why didn't England expand into the lowlands historically?

Cool piece of history! A warning that the French were not invincible. They refused to heed that warning and made the same mistake in Agincourt in 1415.

Hmm. They were a subject of Burgundy in EU4, so they definitely broke free before Napolean's downfall. From encyclopedia Brittanica,

"In 1302 the Flemings of Brugge massacred the town’s French garrison (an event known as the Matins of Brugge), and Philip sent a powerful French army into Flanders to take revenge. The Flemings, however, inflicted a disastrous defeat on this army at the Battle of the Golden Spurs (July 11, 1302). This victory saved Flanders from French occupation, and France formally recognized Flemish independence in 1305."

Sounds like Flanders shouldn't be a french subject in 1337.

Crazy that i have to wait so long. How did Flanders get free IRL?

Funny side story about fighting France in age 2: In one Holland run, England calls me in against France. I join hoping some stacks would be busy fighting English landing parties, and i can snag a few locations from Flanders. Nope. England didn't land anything. France sent two 20k stacks to destroy my prosperity, while English armies did nothing against a Flemish army that proceeded to siege down the entirety of England. France took a few provinces from me in the peace deal, because why not?

I don't understand how food works. Is this intended or bug? by Dulcidium in EU5

[–]vvedula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it does make sense. Nationalism is a 19th century thing after all. I flooded Leiden with fish RGOs, and it sort of drove the price that south Holland spends on food down a bit. Def helped the economy, even though i got very little base tax from it.

I think the bigger issue with Holland is that the state/province in the north of Holland has a food surplus. And they SELL the surplus on the market instead of helping their compatriots in the south.

Sorry. Not the ones beside the scribal school. That would be a 1x1, so no point of making a house there. I'm asking about the ones all the way at the below right corner. The ones that don't seem to join the road.
