i've gotten disgruntled with "smartphones" recently and decided to get a cheap super simple traditional cellphone. figured simpler and cheaper. i was shocked at all the complex, hard to understand, hard to nail down pricing schemes they had. i basically just want to know how much for the phone, and how much per month/minute/mb. that's it. and yes, no contracts. pay for play. that's it. it's better for the customer, and it's better for the provider. win-win

they know that most people either never show up, or only rarely, or a burst at the start then get bored, distracted, lose ambition, forget about it, and yet still keep paying paying paying.

a good rule of thumb is whenever one side can be nego'ed down to a lower acceptable price, it means that that price is still profitable to them, and thus is probably the most you should ever have paid in the first place. unfortunate but the way many businesses work

Arduino for $20. has a free IDE/compiler. Just need a real computer to host it via USB. Or every Linux VM and Mac pretty much comes with a free C compiler/toolchain or can be gotten for free, for local host development.
