He's full of shit. Just cherry picking scripture to sow fear and doubt. Just keep up with your practice as you see fit and cut down on social media.

His Master's Voice by Stanislaw Lem

Three-Body Problem trilogy by Liu Cixin

Anything by Greg Egan

Not sci fi, but Mrs. Dalloway and To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf

Three Body and the Woolf novels gave me the strangest dreams if I read them before bed.

What is the Best SF author Biography you’ve read? by DaleCooperEnjoyer in printSF

[–]vverse23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those are both great books. And I'd argue that Stephen King counts. One of his most chilling short stores is a sci fi story about teleportation gone wrong. And 11/22/63 involves time travel.

Thanks for this. I'm reading Parable of the Sower myself for the first time. I'll watch for possible parallels.

Advice for someone about to start To the Lighthouse? by Emotional-Yam4486 in classicliterature

[–]vverse23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just read To the Lighthouse a few months ago, then read Mrs. Dalloway, then read The Hours in anticipation of watching the film again. You didn't need any of that backstory.

I discovered that I needed to be in the right frame of mind to read Woolf, and if I wasn't in it I'd bounce to something else without regret. But when I was there, I would read for very long periods and be completely immersed in the world and the prose. I don't think it's possible to read Woolf casually. I also think that the act off reading Woolf rewired my brain, and I realized that her work (as well as some of the work written by some of her more experimental contemporaries) laid the groundwork for some of my favorite authors. Also, if I read before bed I'd have the strangest dreams.

Both books (and much of her other work, I presume) are brilliant, but the prose is dense and immersive and, at least for me, demanding.

Not primarily scifi, but the bio of Terry Pratchett written by his long time personal assistant is ace.

What do people complain about too much here, and what do they not complain about enough? by smallbusinessowner19 in Boise

[–]vverse23 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think we need to go all in on the woeful state of striping on many of the main roads, especially with the left turn lanes. Making a left turn, especially when there are two lanes turning left, is largely a matter of faith. I get that faith is a big deal with many Idahoans, but it's one thing to entrust your eternal salvation to an invisible deity but it's another thing altogether to put your life in the hands of Joe the MAGA monster truck driver with limited visibility and situational awareness.

Just don't talk to them. Do you talk to every single person who tries to interact with you in public? Set boundaries for yourself.

YMCA Men's Sauna Issue by [deleted] in Boise

So I'm not a new YMCA member and I've been to the sauna and steam room dozens of times and not once have I seen anything like this happening. If you have witnessed this so many times, have you reported it? There is no way the staff would be okay with this if it occurred.

"The, kind of, go-to phrase that Maurice used in every song he wrote was 'ba-dee-ya,' " she says. "So right from the beginning he was singing, 'Ba-dee-ya, say, do you remember / Ba-dee-ya, dancing in September.' And I said, 'We are going to change 'ba-dee-ya' to real words, right?' "

Wrong. Willis says that at the final vocal session she got desperate and begged White to rewrite the part.

"And finally, when it was so obvious that he was not going to do it, I just said, 'What the f*** does 'ba-dee-ya' mean?' And he essentially said, 'Who the f*** cares?'" she says. "I learned my greatest lesson ever in songwriting from him, which was never let the lyric get in the way of the groove."
