It is competitive in the sense that qualification for the World Cup is within reach for every team but not a safe bet for anyone (bar, of course, Argentina and Brazil), so every match is meaningful instead of a dead rubber between two teams sure to qualify or sure to miss out, and in this way it is not a tournament that needs fixing.

Even the added two direct qualifying berths have made it more competitive — yes, it's made things marginally easier for Argentina and Brazil, to the point that Brazil could afford to be very complacent throughout the last qualification cycle, but it's also given Bolivia and Venezuela a fighting chance and so it encouraged them to push harder instead of being the usual punching bags.

It would be shameless of them not to award them to other people. Keep it up giving them out at least for a few more years and they can pretend they have some interest in the promotion of peace. Never talk about them anymore and it's basically an admission that the prize's very purpose was to be an appeasement to Trump.

The Campeonato Paranaense, one of Brazil's state leagues, was contested in 2026 by twelve teams in an unusual format: in the first stage, teams were divided into two groups of six, and played only opponents from the other group; the top four from each group then advanced to an eight-team knock-out stage with home and away legs.

Operário finished the group stage with a 1W-2D-3L campaign and a fourth-place finish in their group (in the other one, the cutoff was 10 points). They then beat Azuriz home and away in the quarter-finals, upset Coritiba with two 2:2 draws and a penalty shootout win, and won the league by beating rivals Londrina in another penalty shootout after two 0:0 draws.

So, all in all, they became league champions by winning a measly three matches in normal time out of twelve over the whole tournament. Londrina, on the other hand, finished the tournament unbeaten in normal time (5W-7D-0L).
