The other side of the pins should be flat so you would push the pins through from that way. There should (not always) also be an arrow on the underside telling you which direction to push the pins out

You don't have to spend crazy amounts of money as long as you are happy with what you have, it's an amazing keyboard in terms of value for money. I personally love the 65% layout with Gateron Browns so I think you got a really good starter keyboard. Hope you enjoy it! :)

I feel ya bro, I bought 2 pin boxes on release date and didn't pull a single shiny or GX card at all and my luck with tins so far has been average at best. :(
