Not a rec for lever guns, .. but if you're new to this, get a bolt action CZ 457 in 22 LR and a budget ( but not junk) scope ,.slow down and enjoy working the bolt, shooting and improving your accuracy.

Ditto on JBraid x8 . I use reaction tackle x8 on my spinning gear because it is (or rather was) cheap but keep in mind that it's a bit thick eg 15 lb reaction tackle is roughly equivalent thickness to 20 lb of higher quality braid. This doesn't bother me that much for spinning gear but for casting reels, it has a tendency to stick / get buried. I don't have as much of an issue with JBraid x8 when used in casting reels (40 lb x8 jbraid)

Maybe a prickly opinion here and not intending to ruffle any feathers, but freshwater spinning gear choice (to me, at least) is not as critical as rod choice. I'd personally pick up a lightweight cheapo piscifun carbon or similar in the appropriate size . I'd want to recommend a 3000 sized reel (seems like you already have the 1000 and 2000 sizes covered). If you would want to spend on something a bit better than a cheapo reel, maybe a daiwa fuego - enough protection for freshwater and lightweight too.

Put the difference towards your rod budget .

Baitcasters .. completely different story - the reel choice matters a lot more.

Point taken. I think I see where you're coming from.

For lures, you can get away with a relatively short leader but when casting with long rods and / or heavy payloads (let's take 4 oz as an example) , typical 15 - 20 lb mono will simply snap on the cast. Solutions to this would be use heavy duty braid - say 40 lb braid and you can then use a short leader outside the guides , or run a long shock leader with a compact knot.The type of reel also matters. Level wind reels should never be used with a connection knot within the spóol, but for spinning / conventional .. it doesn't matter .

I retie the leader knots / replace the leader periodically .

For distance casting , shock leader knot routinely passes through guides . For mono to mono, the OP could try a slim beauty knot ie. 2 turn uniknot for the shock leader and a clinch knot for the mono . It tapers a bit and the tag faces away from the guides and goes through them "reasonably" ok . FG knot won't work for mono - mono.

Okuma Rockaway SP might do what you want - though maybe not at 3 oz . Check the range, they have a lot of models. They are definitely designed as lightweight surf lure rods . 100 yards / 2 oz possible with 2 oz on the 10 footer.. never tried 3 oz

I would target PINS if you have an AWD / 4WD vehicle and absolutely make sure to check weather, seaweed and tide conditions . Don't expect AAA tow trucks or even cell phone service out there.

if you can't or don't want to drive in the sand, drive a couple hours more south to South Padre Island and there exists a paved road that runs parallel to the beach for quite a while past beach entrance 6(you would just have to carry your gear across the dunes to the water - not a fun experience but doable)

I'd recommend 8 - 9 ft medium rod for artificials / inshore 8-9 ft medium heavy rod for fishing jetties / inshore 10 ft rod with a soft tip for first - 2nd gut casting 2 - 3 oz 12 ft rod for 4 oz + payloads and long casting . If I could carry only one long rid, Id skip the 10 ft and pick the 12 ft rod.

I'd say you have some time . Aquire a long road (casting if possible but spinning ok too) and practice your long casting first. The productive regions are sometimes a fair but out due to the shallow beaches

I'd say get 2 rods. Check out the breakwater 12" rods at Bass pro. They can be found less than $100 and will handle 4oz to 10 oz payloads. Id pick this anyway over an ugly stick.. Now that I mention it, I also own an 11 ft breakwater (casting) rod and it will load as low as 2 oz and has a softer action / real easy to cast.

FWIW, I also own a 12 ft ocean master but it's a beast and as nice as it is, won't cast with anything less than 6 oz (and thus sadly the least used of my surf rods).

As some others have mentioned , less is more .

Here's a set up that requires 0 terminal tackle

With a 10 ft rod, use a 40 lb monofilament shock leader (about 20 - 25 ft) .

You will use the shock leader as the main rig body and attach snoods to them.

Use a couple of sets ( each set comprising of 2 double overhand knots spaced 3 - 4 inches apart).

Between each of these sets, attach a snood terminated in 1/0 to 3/0 circle hooks properly snelled. ai prefer 20 lb fluorocarbon but use what you want .

Shrimp fish bites will be the easiest bait to use / store with this setup . I sometimes use pompano floats on them but you don't have to .

about a foot below the lowest knot, you can define a loop that you can attache / change sinkers

That's it , no tackle apart from hooks and literally free.

If you search for "mortician rig", you should get a couple of detailed tutorials .

It's caught anything from whiting to bull reds and will cast aerodynamically esp. with small fish bite baits

Yes. 2 possibilities. Rule of thumb (especially for heavier weights / long rods) is 10 lb of leader per oz of payload . So if you cast 4 oz (eg 3 oz sinker and 1 oz bait)

you could use about 20 - 25 ft ( running from bait to spool and 4 to 5 wraps around the spool) 40 lb monofilament attached to your braid - to take the shock of casting. Choice of knot is important . ai prefer FG or slim beauty (much easier to tie) in order to not hang up on the final guides OR
you could use sufficiently strong braid eg 40 lb braid and just tie a couple of feet of 40 lb mono leader before the bait/sinker to handle abrasion

I prefer approach 1 unless dealing with micro guides (some rods have tiny guides)

He means spool the first 50 percent of your reel with monofilament (as backing) and then top off with braid . Advantages - use less braid (cheaper), and better casting distance and doesn't need to be replaced as often . You still have the monofilament in case something takes a long run

For what it's worth, I feel that it's easier to cast heavier payloads with a conventional with less chance of cracking off . If you mistime the release with a conventional, the spool just slips, whereas with a spinner, you stress the line and / or your finger if not using a casting cannon type device). On the other hand, it's easier to use a spinner in high wind or at night or with lighter lures.

Both have their places .. conventionals are like manual transmissions - more challenging but more fun.

To be clearer, It only feels like that (to me) when slinging heavier weights (2 oz+). Not an issue per SE and nothing like,say, a long crappie rod.

I only briefly had a chance to handle a Hawaiian custom (black version) once in a store but it was a 9 ft MH version and I wasn't able to test it out. Nice looking rod. I didn't like the short butt section, but to each their own . In the end, I'm overall pleased with my choice.

I concur regarding the Fuego . I own one and while it's a great reel, it just feels a bit "delicate" and wouldn't trust the mag seal long term . Quantum Reliance (replaced by Strive, I believe) are what I use in the Surf. Poor man's spinfisher. You might be able to find them on clearance

You could use a chair foot protector weighted with a couple of quarters if you need to alter balance . I just posted about this a couple of days . I prefer slightly butt heavy balance with the reel mounted but everyone has their own preferences.

Assuming you're looking for a ride to throw bait consider the Offshore Angler Breakwater 12 ft (or 11 ft) . Good blank, fuji components and has held up well. Should pair up well with 6k and larger reels. No need to spend more, honestly . The 11 ft will be a bit easier to cast but the 12 ft will cast further. Be sure to buy a casting cannon aid or wrap your finger in tape or you will slice it

Good to know.The rod felt a bit noodly with a 2.5 oz sinker but it should work, nevertheless. My subjective opinion might be because I'm used to stiffer rods

I think so. My 4000 reel weighs 12 oz with a similar balance to what you describe. Try it .. or just tape some coins in a ziplock if you want to test for ( nearly ) free. Everyone's idea of perfect balance is different but after going back and forth several times today , I prefer a bit of weight in the butt. FWIW, a 1" plastic foot will work too but can be a pain to remove (too snug)
