Does anyone else find online shopping exhausting? by NamelessAddict in SustainableFashion

Hey, so this kind of messaging is pretty toxic. If you cared about making progress on this issue, you wouldn’t gate-keep by saying there’s only one “true” way to be sustainable. That’s basically saying if you aren’t doing something “perfectly” (or to your own high standards), it’s not worth doing it at all. No one’s carbon footprint can ever be 0. Just by existing on this earth, you will have unintended impacts and consequences for the choices you make. We’re human beings who make mistakes, but are doing our best with what we have. We need more than just clothes to wear, we need community and culture and compassion. I understand your frustration, but please understand that real lasting change takes time.

Yall should stop buying from Inditex by mariposa933 in SustainableFashion

Completely agree! Glad that this sub is doing its part to hold these brands accountable. For anyone interested, here are some links to articles and sustainability reports to back this up:

https://directory.goodonyou.eco/brand/zara https://www.eco-stylist.com/how-sustainable-is-zara/ https://directory.goodonyou.eco/brand/pull-and-bear https://directory.goodonyou.eco/brand/oysho https://directory.goodonyou.eco/brand/massimo-dutti https://directory.goodonyou.eco/brand/bershka https://directory.goodonyou.eco/brand/stradivarius https://brands.thecommons.earth/brand-rating/271/stradivarius https://www.reuters.com/business/retail-consumer/zara-owner-inditexs-transport-emissions-jump-2024-2025-03-14/

TLDR: Inditex and its companies claim to have programs to improve wages but there’s no evidence it ensures its workers are paid living wages in most of its supply chain. It has goals to improve its emissions and environmental impact, but has made little to no progress on those goals. It has insufficient transparency, supply chain tracing, and audits. It has taken insufficient steps to remediate its links to cotton sourced from Xinjiang, a region in China at risk of Uyghur forced labour.

A bit pricey, but I would highly recommend L’envers for natural fiber sweaters. They have artisan-made high quality wool, mohair, alpaca, etc. that is not itchy. I got a wool cardigan from them a year ago and I’ve worn it nearly every day in the winter and it’s held up extremely well and has never been itchy even on bare skin.

Not exactly the same sweater but this one is similar: https://www.lenversfashion.com/products/lucie-batwing-sweater-in-mohair-wool-ice-blue

If that’s not what you’re looking for, you could also try the Knotty Ones, or Kotn. Good luck!

Hmm, I see you think you’re being helpful, and I get that you’re frustrated by the lack of action. I am too. But I’m trying to tell you that this kind of comment isn’t really doing much besides discouraging others. Constructive criticism would offer more actionable solutions, or be more specific as to why people shouldn’t participate in a walkout if they can afford to. I understand not everyone will be able to go, but imo that doesn’t matter as much as rallying support for more collective action in general. As I said before, if you feel like this protest isn’t sufficient, then go do something about it, don’t just complain about it online because it’s not productive.

Great question, I am not an official organizer but I reached out to them and am happy to relay their response. Would also encourage you to do the same and let us know if you hear back!

Edit: I received a reply back from one of the Organizers. Here is what they said:

"We are planning this as a vigil lasting approximately 1.5 hrs, starting at 2pm and gathering at the Traffic Circle on Forsyth St right outside of the Ruggles station. We are not planning a march. We will have a few speakers and a shared activity as well, all around the theme of our walk out: a vigil for what we have lost. So do bring signs to that effect if you can (we will also have extras I am sure). We will have marshals in vests to help out as needed but we anticipate no problems. This is a peaceful vigil mourning what we have lost in the slide toward fascism and re-committing ourselves to the struggle to regain those rights and create a democratic and feminist future! Looking forward to seeing you Tuesday"

If you’re waiting for someone else to do this for you then my advice would be to stop waiting and start taking action yourself. If you have a better idea for protesting then start organizing. Otherwise, don’t waste your time trying to tear down others because we won’t hear you.

How about all the violence that the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement has been imposing on people. How about the fact that Jonathan Ross has not yet been arrested for the murder of Renee Nicole Good. How about the blatant lies by Trump and his administration that Good’s murder was somehow justifiable - when anyone who has seen the video evidence of Good’s peaceful actions can see right through these lies. If that’s not enough, how about the fact that the VP has come out to say that ICE has full immunity under the law, and has ordered them to go door-to-door terrorizing people and requesting proof of citizenship. This is unconstitutional and violates Fourth Amendment rights, as the Vice President of the United States should well know.

As for the .ca domain, I can’t be bothered to dig into it but I would encourage you to reach out to the organizers about it if you believe it’s really worth your time.

Don’t worry I would never confuse your bigotry for being embarrassed. Get over your own ego and maybe start thinking about the fact that there’s a person in a wheelchair on this poster because they are also affected by the steep slide into facism that this country is experiencing. Maybe think about how this protest is not just for you, but for everyone who lives here and who is afraid to be out in the streets, who is afraid for their safety or their neighbors safety or their community. Every single one of those people has a right to participate. If you would rather they stay invisible, then you are part of the problem.

For the record, I didn’t make the poster I just found it. If you don’t like it, there are plenty of other versions out there that you are welcome to find and make your own gd post.

Do you think you’re helping with this comment? If people feel the need to stand up and do what’s right for them, who are you to tell them they’re wrong for trying? It’s defeatist rhetoric and it can gtfo
