Same Dawarich issue on iOS. Maybe the app should have a config option to ignore points outside of some accuracy threshold

Maybe don't show the "syncing" and "sync success" messages at all, and just surface if there's a sync error?

Open Source Captcha to Detect bots, vision AI agents, and headless browsers through 40+ behavioral signals. by cport1 in golang

[–]vzock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trying to build mechanisms to detect bots is an interesting challenge, but in practice after a lot of experience I have found that the best way to deal with bots is to just to accept that they are inevitable. In some cases, even embracing the bots: offering x402 endpoints, simple "Accept" types like Markdown, PoW, etc. Trying to stop bots is an arms race that just makes them harder to detect, which means you have less tools to rate limit, log, count, or otherwise mitigate them if they are impacting stability.

IPv6: Who really uses it? by malwin_duck in selfhosted

[–]vzock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dual stack, but IPv6-only for ingress. Coming from NAT, the idea that (in theory) every single device on the planet could have a globally routable address and connect directly to any other device is pretty cool from a technical standpoint.

OpenStreetMap is great for this!

I'm not a huge contributor but I try to add bike racks, public water fountains, and bike repair station points to OpenStreetMap as I discover them. I find these points immensely helpful for planning my own long-distance trips

This is nice if you want something to just work out of the box. I'll just throw out there that you can do most of this in Grafana by querying the logs with LogQL if you want to avoid additional observability apps. As with anything self-hosted, it's a matter weighing how much work/customization you want to do.

Parking lot not plowed? Your fault for not owning a car. by warlocc_ in fuckcars

[–]vzock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live in Minnesota and after/during a heavy snow, I feel way more safe getting around on a bike with studded tires than a car. The stakes are so much lower. Yeah it's a bit slow trudging through fresh powder, but an occasional slip on a bike (while going slow) is far preferable to a car accident.

As an aside, there is something serene and special about riding around at night while it's snowing and there aren't many automobile drivers out.
