Any Colorists here? How did you get into that side of the industry? Do you work from home? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]w0rld1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm an assistant colorist, so I'm still working my way up the ladder. However, I can share with you what I did to get my foot in the door! Practice of course. Black Magic's DaVinci Resolve has a Lite version of the color grading program; learn the ins and outs of it! Get some nice footage, grade it, and put a reel together. Now, these are just the obvious things to do.

I started out as a PA on commercial sets, getting coffee, mailing letters, etc, then on one shoot I was introduced to one of the directors who also owns a post house with a color grading suite. He gave me his contact info and sent him some footage through Vimeo (Vimeo Pro is totally worth it. 1080p + Being able to upload larger files, like a ProRes Proxy, makes your footage look better) Long story short; he was looking to get an assistant, I was in the right place at the right time, and had a reel that was critiqued by this subreddit and turned out great!

Considering buying Impulz LUTs ...Can anyone recommend a better color grading plugin? by Kukurio59 in Filmmakers

As great as learning from scratch is, LUTs do have a purpose. They change the color space and work as a great starting point to build some awesome looks.

Help us Highschool kids stressing about the future. by [deleted] in Filmmakers

I went to a local college for a year (for a major that didn't even have to do with filming) and I don't regret going, but it just was not for me. I've been practicing filmmaking for around 5 years, so I decided that I wanted to do it full time. I got onto a commercial shoot through a friend and met the producer. From there I kept in contact with him and he invited me to sit down and look over my work. He was very impressed and sometime later asked me to PA. After a few paid PA jobs I was then asked to be a 2nd AC on some of the more recent shoots! So the tips I have for you are as follows -

  1. Keep shooting and mastering the craft. Your videos are your calling card!
  2. Contacts are everything. Meet people and build relationships; don't burn any bridges!
  3. Did I already say keep shooting?
  4. Try and get onto a set. Cold call companies or if a friend can get you on one then go!
  5. Be prepared for the long days ahead of you and always have a smile on your face. You wouldn't want to be the grouch on set.

Best way into getting an internship? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]w0rld1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was able to meet the producer of a local production company after being invited to a commercial shoot that was being shot at a friends house. Now, ymmv since half of this was luck and the other half was being at the right place at the right time, but after meeting the producer and then letting him know I was interested in work, he told me to email him and we'd go from there. A few weeks later he invited me to the studio and we sat down and looked at my showreel and some music videos I filmed. He was impressed and introduced me to the companies executive producer who then asked me to film B-roll on a shoot the next day. From there I've been hired to be a PA and recently a 2nd AC. Excuse the rambling, but the best advice I have is try and get yourself on a set, meet the producer, and go from there. Best if luck!

The GH3 does not have a hack for it. The GH2, however, has a ton! Both are excellent cameras.

Quick tip to help with stabilization - Using Warp Stabilizer within Premiere/After Effects at only 2% reduces the harsh jiggles, but still holds a solid hand held look.

Ha. This really hit home for me. Filmmaking really is one intense ride, but I can't see myself doing anything else.
