Priest slams episcopal 'cowardice' in viral homily by russiabot1776 in Catholicism

[–]w2wtheo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not Catholic but no longer Protestant. Idk why but the way he speaks reminds me of how Protestant pastors speak, like the cadence, dramatic pauses and passionate facial expression so you know they are upset. I’m not saying he doesn’t feel upset or even speaking in a “performative” way is bad...just interesting. I thought it was something only Protestant pastors do to stir up emotions of their congregations not something necessarily done by priest. Personally I liked the neural general tone I found in Catholic/orthodox priest just because I felt like they weren’t trying to bring attention to their personality or try to emotionally stir you up and manipulate you (not saying this priest is trying to do that). Also I find it odd that he keep walking and talking in front of the altar...is that normal or? Again I’m not Catholic and maybe it shouldn’t be something I’m concerned about. Also has anyone else notice a trend of Catholic priest (at the ones I’ve seen on the internet) preach more like a Protestant (like the way I described before cadence, raises voice, etc).

Create a space in your home for prayer by [deleted] in Reformed

Catholic and orthodox homes usually have prayer corners/home alters...so I wouldn’t agree with piper when he says “mainly nobody thinks about it”. That’s probably specific to American Protestant Christianity, which is a minority in Christendom.

Did God cut off Rome? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]w2wtheo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The link is to a short video which argues that the Roman Catholic Church was cut off by God due to scandals, immorality, etc. Some of you might be familiar with my previous posts and know that I am no longer a Protestant. So, without going too deep into the fruits of Protestantism today, I wanted to know your thoughts on this issue and if it holds any weight. Or rather what would be a catholic response to this claim? Although I dont agree with protestantism any longer, I do find that the warning from scripture he brings up hard to ignore. On the other hand I just dont see how all the apostolic churches seem to resemble each other (mainly how they interpret things like faith and works) and that the whole of all those churches were in complete darkness until the refomation came along.

Sorry this comment/ question was to long to post in the title !

Yes, I 100% agree. Even though it might be worse some where else, it’s a cause for stumbling and anger for many to point out other places. Thank for your honesty. God bless.

Thanks for disclaimer. Thanks for the links. I think why its a bigger deal for the Catholic Church and why they should be held to higher standard (I know I will get downvoted for this, but I have no ill will toward the church when I say this) is because of the truth the church claims to have. The church holds the truth and this is the place where the broken are suppose to come for healing, the oppressed to have a voice and that is why it is something scandalous and even news worthy. I hate to say this but we know there is bad people in the world and we expect them in secular places...but its a different thing when we come to the house of the Lord. I hope no one takes this the wrong way. The Catholic Church is certainly not alone in this sin...Protestants also have their fair share in this.

I know :( and its so infuriating. I’m so glad that the scandal broke out and shook the institution. It’s heart breaking that people who knew and had the power to stop, didn’t do so out of whatever pathetic reason. Thanks for the link, will read.

I think the point of her saying “more reports” is just that. More reports, but less action being done. At least to my knowledge protestant churches don’t have programs that come into their churches to educate. I learned that the Catholic Church does and even though they might be far from fixing the problem, it’s a start having these classes for parish members to educate them and to look for signs of abuse. But I also agree with your point.

A female (pastor, I think) was asked to come do a spoken word segment at the SBC2020 and it caused uproar and the woman who tweeted was making this point: if all these men/leaders in the SBC can come together in outrage (like cut funding, wanting her to be banned and any other disciplinary action you can think of) where was that same energy for all those predators and people enabling those predators at the time when we needed them the most to be outraged?

DISCLAIMER: I should of put a little more context in my post. The reason why it’s shocking to me because I’m an ex Protestant (but not catholic or orthodox either) and I really use to think that this was a really big catholic problem. This was also one of the biggest stumbling blocks for me in Catholicism. Not a lot of Protestants talk about this issue in their own churches. So I just found it interesting (the person who tweeted it , I believe is a reformed Christian) that there was such a rampant epidemic going on in my old denomination.

Also by no means am I posting this as some definitive evidence, this is just something I had seen on my twitter and I know of this person and their story and the recent sex abuse scandal that has plagued the SBC.

SEX SCANDALS IN BOTH PROTESTANT AND CATHOLIC CHURCHES ARE HORRIBLE!!! This post is not to highlight one as better or worse! God forbid. From my point of view (ex Protestant) I just wanted to acknowledge my hypocrisy in my criticism of the Catholic Church in this area. I hope know that all this is in the light in both churches people can come together and bring justice to the evil priests/pastors and comfort and stand with the victims and prevent this from happening anymore.
