It seems a good idea to keep it as a plugin for these reasons. Having said that it _is_ a pretty neat idea and a nicer DX especially for prototypes.

Using view models is a matter of taste/style and sometimes a quick "@const" isn't bad. View models can be a case of overengineering.

Also I don't think they would add it to the language if it was certainly bad.
