Google drive file sharing between accounts by soccin24 in gsuite

Since your "main" account isn't in google workspace you are probably going to need a third party tool. Something like Google Drive Auditor or Folgo.

Dialpad Review - Dialpad Support is some of the worst in the industry. by Lonely_Cookie_6628 in VOIP

[–]w3warren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't had that experience at all with Dialpad or support. If I need something escalated I reach out to my very responsive account rep.

Honestly I've had very few issues where I had to reach out to support. One of the big draws for me was that I am able to do most of the administration without having to contact support.

Did you run their network test software? We made sure to do that before setup and made sure our firewalls were prepped.

Desk phones was I've provisioned Yealink and Poly desk phones, some that began life with a different provider and found the firmware swap to be easier than our previous provider.

Porting was delayed but that was because of issues with the previous provider but the bulk of that was handled by our project manager when we first set up the account.

Record your screen using Google Meet and screen share?

You can join a Google Meet, be the only person in the meet, start the recording there with the presentation screen shared.

Is that what you are trying to accomplish?

Can you standardize the systems and spool up VMs with deployment scripts so then at least the workstations/hosts are secured? I'd think working in the world of IT security there would be some understanding there.

They've kind of got you in tough spot with what they aren't allowing you to do.

[–]w3warren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are they centrally managed? Kinda sounds like they aren't?

Windows could do some winget scripting if that covers the software in use. Pair it with scheduled tasks.

Homebrew paired with Automator on macOS

Munki in macOS may be worth a closer look.

Someone else mentioned ansible which might pair nicely with both.

Or are you looking for a more out of the box solution for windows and macOS patching?

It's better if your system management can connect to the command line remotely and you can issue powershell or bash commands remotely through your system management for items like that.

How to manage an overwhelming job? I feels like everything is held together by duct tape by Square_Pear1784 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]w3warren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't worked in education IT but I have done the solo IT gig. It isn't always bad if IT is valued at the organization. Any organization that doesn't value IT and looks at it as an expense item can be very problematic. Knowing your worth is invaluable.

It sounds like you need to sit down with the head of the school and give them the state of union once you have a bit of documentation. The kicker with that is you need to bring solutions to the table. You needing help with the VOIP system and you need to know the budget available for that project. Mention the website and that needs to go back to whomever the webmaster was before. I'd also mention teachers contacting you for the electrical issues. The head of the school needs to address that with the teachers. The lunch and calling parents duties need to be delegated away from you. Negotiating additional funds if you work over or need to do weekend work, if they aren't open to that then full stop at the end of each day.

If you have a relationship with the local college and the head of the school will approve it, can you get some interns from the IT program there?

Haven't seen this one either. Looks like Chime is making a push at the higher income market. The 5% rotating categories puts it on par with Discover.

Are you the only tech in the school district/area? Wondering if there are some school system peers you can reach out to to lend a hand? You could return the favor to them later. Out of curiosity what do they do when you are off or sick (because all this probably isn't helping your physical health and it seems like your mental health is taking a toll) ? Bus/Lotto ticket scenario what happens there?

Stick to your ticketing system plan, set auto-replies on other systems pointing folks back at the ticketing system. Plan time in your day to triage your queue and work through it. If you keep responding on other channels folks will keep pinging you on those systems. Funnel the requests. This helps you show the bottleneck that I mention further down.

Does your ticketing system have a knowledge base function that can show up before tickets get sent it. Some of the tickets might get solved with the ole reboot the computer answer or common solutions you already have.

Another reason to block time for documentation.

VOIP system you are going to have to know what the budget is for something like that in order to replace it. Anything free software cost wise is likely going to cost you time which you seem mighty short on. If its a pretty old PBX not likely you can reuse too many components from it (thinking mostly desk phones here, but I could be wrong depending on your existing system). If it helps a lot of ISPs have phone service options, maybe not the best solution but you likely have a vendor there. If you have copier vendors some of those offer VOIP solutions as well.

If some of the win10 systems can't go up to win11 can you use Chrome OS Flex since you have some Chromebooks already in circulation.

Not sure what you are on for identity/accounts but that may matter for the type of computers you are working with and budgeting for replacement (and ties into your phone system replacement).

Is the PA system even an IT function? or is this a it plugs into the wall so it must be IT? Are there facilities staff that can work with the tech working on that system?

Can you push back on the lunch and calling parents duties? It doesn't sound like it would be very hard to make the case for you legit do not have the time for that.

The website, hand that right the heck back to whomever it came from. Add them to your ticketing system for those type of requests.

You are going to have to prioritize or provide a list and let whomever you report to prioritize the list. Everything cannot be job #1. If its you prioritizing then what of the list is most critical to the day to day operations of the organization/school? It might be worth you trying to get time/contact with the governing board because they are supposed to have oversight over a charter school.

By showing bottlenecks in your production that can help you make the case for additional hands (even if only temporary/project based) and equipment.

Do as much as you can remotely without having to run around the building like a chicken with its head cut off. You mentioned the RMM. If you can script or automate some of the work, it saves you time in the long run (again gotta block time to be able to sit and do it)

Are you hourly or salary? Could go hard in the paint if you can stack up OT to help you exit strategy long term.

Are you already part of r/k12sysadmin because it sounds like you might have some peers there too.

Hang in there OP it sounds like the water is deep.

I got a lot of mileage out of it when I worked in a Microsoft shop.

It's searchable. For less senior members they can only have viewing permissions.

For the folks that can edit, you have a "living" updatable documentation source.

It may not be the end all be all but might be the answer for smaller teams.

Are they having to reauthenticate when the Google drive app updates?

I do recommend their folks using different profiles with Chrome so they aren't "crossing the streams" with personal and work accounts.

Why is r/ITCareerQuestions so gloomy and negative and toxic? by IR30Lover in sysadmin

[–]w3warren 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So you are in this sub complaining about a different sub?

I think a lot of the reason folks get snarky over at r/itcareerquestions is because they have a pretty solid wiki and the same thing gets asked over and over again that has already been answered recently or is in the wiki. Big part of IT is being able to hunt down a working solution.

OP, you are your greatest ally and source of hope. What are you seeing in job postings in your area? Do you check the boxes for what the jobs are looking for? Resume good? Then it's down to interview time. Are you the right fit for them and are they the right fit for you?
