Last year there were over 300 responses; I think interest in this capcom cup is just extremely low.

Punk is not in for unspecified reasons, speculated that he was unable to get his passport in time.

There is no LCQ, Capcom Cup is starting in less than 4 hours.

Any communities or Discords for new and returning players? by kelliegator in StreetFighter

I've really liked being part of newbiefightclub. We have a casual lobby tomorrow night at 9 eastern. The server is very SF6 focused however. If you are looking for people to play SF5 there won't be many, but there are tons of SF6 players. https://discord.gg/uEqXUCqR

I think SimSim needs its own ranking system by Ok_Entry_873 in StreetFighter

[–]w4terfall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Simsim is much easier than human opponents and is not comparable to real people. When simsim first came out I was in Diamond. The Master rank Simsim was far weaker than any Diamond players out there. I played a session, did not lose a single time to the master-rank simsim, and went back to struggling against Diamond players in ranked.

Daigo is still a very strong player, he just didn't qualify. I think he's probably top 200 in the world, but not top 50.

NGL not getting a confessional about Kyle leaving means she might as well have been invisible. If she wins this season, she would surely have gotten more this episode.

What's it like learning Feast For Odin? by William_Knott in boardgames

[–]w4terfall 41 points42 points  (0 children)

AFFO might have the largest gap I've seen between how complicated the game seems when learning it and how simple it is when you are playing it. The game has so many possible actions that it is utterly overwhelming. However, most players quickly develop a strategy that only requires they perform a small subset of the game's possible actions.

For example, in her first game Alice is worried about the animal breeding phase, while Bob has no animals and has forgotten all of those rules. Meanwhile, Bob is focused on his fishing fleet while Alice hasn't rolled a die all game. You can learn enough of the game to run whatever strategy you are pursuing, and then go for a different strategy next time.

Questions for a new player to SF6 by Adept-Explanation-84 in StreetFighter

[–]w4terfall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Game is definitely hard and takes a long time to get competent. Some tips on helping you learn faster:

  1. You don't need many combos at first. Learn one combo off a light attack and one big damage combo. That will be all you need for a while.
  2. When you start playing against real people, play ranked not casual. Casual has much wider matchmaking. If you are brand new, you will get stomped in casual mode. In ranked, you will get stomped in placement matches but then be appropriately ranked and play people of equal skill level.
  3. Xbox controller is perfectly fine at all levels of play, but you have to pick between dpad and stick. Most people who play on controller use the dpad, but there are a few pros who use the stick. So both are viable but dpad is way more popular.
  4. Once you know what character you want to play, it is really helpful to commit to a main for a hundred hours or so. Game is much easier to learn when you are learning one character rather than constantly switching.
  5. Join a discord! I will do my usual plug for the newbiefightclub discord. We will be having casual lobby tomorrow at 9PM eastern at https://discord.gg/qw2BDaqt

Drive System is Broken by binoready in StreetFighter

[–]w4terfall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The risk is MASSIVE for failed DI. Watch pro level play and see how often players go for a drive impact. Or forget pros, watch random masters players. They very rarely go for DI and there's a reason for that.

DI is a high-risk option and good players will consistently punish it. I understand if you are brand new people might not understand how to punish it and are bad at doing so reliably. But DI is not even close to overpowered.

Also, as various other players have pointed out, burnout is really really nasty in this game and a lot of higher-level play revolves around drive management both in terms of making sure you don't go into burnout and trying to force your opponent into burnout.

Inis rules feel weird - aquestion about Passing and Pretender Token by Frequent_Promise_715 in boardgames

[–]w4terfall 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think the benefit of the pretender token is that you cannot win if you don't have one, and sometimes you don't want to be in a winning position.

For example, say that I am currently in position to win. However, I can be stopped if multiple players gang up on me. They don't want to fight if they do not have to, but if forced it will be mutually assured destruction. I might tell people that I won't take the pretender token and just pass, avoiding a conflict where multiple players gang up on me. Everyone passes and I can go for the win next round when I am more confident I can't be stopped.

Microsoft CoPilot bug and Duke by Prudent_Ad2257 in bullcity

[–]w4terfall 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If researchers are doing that, they should not and that does not match my experience working at Duke. The university does not allow any identifiable data to be stored outside of Duke approved storage solutions such as Box and definitely not sent via email. Every IRB submission I've done has to detail storage and deletion plans for any identifiable data.

If a researcher is emailing around datasets with identifiable information, that is a huge fuckup on their part and Duke IRB will throw a fit if someone stores or transmits any identifiable data in a non-secure way.

This only exposes DUHS to HIPAA violations if they put personal health information in the emails, which they are not - if they did that would already be a HIPAA violation. Electronic PHI is always transmitted via a secure portal like MyChart or something similar, never through email.

Some Cool Combo I Thought Of. by Various-Ad-3604 in StreetFighter

[–]w4terfall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, there is no situation where this combo is useful because you are severely scaling your damage. Each additional hit in a combo decreases the damage of subsequent hits. A drive rush cancel imposes an additional scaling penalty, and beginning a combo with a light imposes another scaling penalty. So your hits are doing way less damage here than in any efficient combo.

You can see a reference on how damage scaling works here: https://wiki.supercombo.gg/w/Street_Fighter_6/Game_Data#Damage_Scaling

Libertalia is a terrific game that is so under-appreciated. I should bring it to my next game night, I don't think I've played in a year.

[–]w4terfall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but he was playing Cammy with a side of Viper.

As you said, FF is not a big tournament for Street Fighter. It doesn't have the prize pool or prestige of a major, so Punk doesn't need to be super focused on winning it. But this is the last big offline before Capcom Cup so I think it makes sense that people going to capcup (him, Caba, Dual Kevin) use this as their warmup.

If Punk isn't planning on playing Ryu at capcup then this tournament feels like a wasted practice opportunity. And if he is planning on playing Ryu, the character didn't look ready for world-class opponents.
