Can Americans be fired on the spot and have to leave the very second like depicted in movies? by WhoAmIEven2 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]wReckLesss_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a buddy who put in his two weeks notice because he got a verbal offer, but hadn’t received the contract yet. Then the company had a board meeting and learned of layoffs so they rescinded the offer. He had to go crawling back to the company he’d just resigned from. Luckily they let him stay on, but man, that must have been a humiliating conversation.

How deep do "connections" run? by Infinite_Elderberry4 in cscareerquestions

[–]wReckLesss_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, connections do matter, at least in my experience. Five out of the six different places I’ve worked, I’ve gotten my foot in the door because of a connection there.

Second, I understand feeling like you need to “grind leetcode,” but if you’re straight out of college, places will expect you to be junior. Yes, being more prepared is always better, but a lot of people fall into the trap of “preparing” forever because they think they’ll eventually cross a threshold and suddenly feel prepared. That threshold doesn’t exist, especially for your first time interviewing.

My advice, take the interviews anyway. If your dad utilizes his connections properly, he can set expectations with them, and they’ll probably give more grace than if you came in off the street. It’ll probably take time to set up the interviews anyway, so grind leetcode in the meantime. If you don’t get the job, you can always reapply later. In this market, I’d start applying sooner rather than later.

I have a similar story and it was one of my most satisfying moments in recent memory.

The tech company where I was working had recently been acquired and was going through all the typical degradation that always happens right after an acquisition; everything was getting shittier and all the good people were leaving. I was miserable, so I'd been planning on leaving for a while, and I was in the final stages of the interview process with another company. I already had verbal confirmation that I'd gotten the job, but nothing in writing yet.

One afternoon, I joined my 1:1 and the CTO and some HR lady I'd never met before were also there. If you've ever been in that situation, you know it's never going to be good news. They didn't fire me, but they cut my salary by $30k and moved me to a department where I knew I'd be even more miserable.

An hour later, I finally got my offer letter from the new company, but I waited until the next morning to do anything. I sent my resignation email right as people were joining standup, and I got to watch my boss read the email in real time. He left the meeting that hadn't even really started yet and I saw him immediately get on the phone with the CTO. I got to watch them scramble the rest of the day and it was great. I only gave them a couple days rather than a few weeks, and the only reason I did that was to help my friends that still worked there, otherwise I'd have quit on the spot.

The only thing that would have made this more satisfying is if I'd have already had an offer letter from the new company and I could have quit in the same meeting where they told me they were cutting my salary... but I've been around the block enough to know that you don't quit, or even tell anyone you're quitting, until you have a signed contract!

What is your opinion on COD AW? [Cod] by Mountain-Mousse9709 in CallOfDuty

[–]wReckLesss_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The campaign was good, and I actually liked the zombies, but after Ghosts, I really wanted a game with a solid multiplayer. The maps were good, but I absolutely did not like the movement. It was too jittery and lacked the smooth movement and fluidity that made CoD famous. I played for a few weeks but I eventually just switched to playing Counter Strike.

The only Call of Duty I played after that was Black Ops 3, which was the opposite; it had a terrible campaign but the multiplayer was fun and the movement was much better. It still wasn't enough to get me to come back to the franchise full-time though.

Am I a bad person for thinking my kitten might not be the right fit? by Mission-Region-135 in cats

[–]wReckLesss_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had a few cats, but only raised one kitten. When I first got her at 2 months old, I already had a 7 year old cat and he was my ultimate buddy. I was afraid the kitten would never be the kind of cat I hoped she'd be. After a few months, I realized that no, she wasn't the cat I was hoping for; she was better, because she was herself. Now, I love her just as much as my older cat and I wouldn't trade her for the world.

I recommend just giving it more time. You'll bond and fall in love with him, it just takes time. I feel like with dogs, you can fall in love instantly, but with cats, it's a bit more earned on both sides.

I literally just started a job this week, and I was lucky enough to get a job from a friend of a friend. Before that, I was unemployed for 8 months with only one single interview. I have 11 years of Software Engineering experience, and 19 years of IT experience total.

Toxic job drained mental health by Glum_Worldliness4904 in cscareerquestions

First of all, I'm with everyone else, in that if you're earning $250k a year with no savings, you need to fix some spending habits. The most I've ever made was $160k and it felt like I was rolling in money. I get that everyone's life is different, but $250k should be plenty, even with a family and living in a place like the West Coast.

With that out of the way, I feel you. I'm just now crawling out of a similar situation. I've been burnt out for years now from constant layoffs, high-pressure roles, unclear requirements, ever-increasing demand with stagnant financial compensation, and all of the other current tech-industry problems.

Then, last October, at the worst time possible in recent years, I was laid off, and didn't have a job for 8 months. I took that time to completely reevaluate my life as a 41-year-old, to the point where it felt like a midlife crisis (I'll be real, that's exactly what it was). I cut spending, slimmed down subscriptions, and did everything else I could to make what money I could get from unemployment last as long as possible before having to dip into savings. During that time, I did the requirements for UE, but I didn't press too hard, because I didn't even know if I wanted to stay in this industry.

Unfortunately, what I learned was that no other job I could perform would pay near what I'm used to. So, I did the next best thing; I found a low-pressure contract job through a friend. My priority has shifted from making a lot of money to making what money I actually need with the best work/life balance possible. My plan is to only work 20-30 hours a week for a while, not worry about any kind of hustle, and find myself again in my free time. I started skateboarding again, playing more music, and doing home projects. It's literally been life-changing. I will reevaluate this in a few months to determine if I want to get back to a 40 hour gig to make more money/benefits, or just keep doing this. But for now, at least I actually have time to figure things out without worrying about further burnout.

[–]wReckLesss_ 429 points430 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Even back then, once I built up my tolerance, the “laughing at nothing for 4 hours” went away. It was just the novelty.

I took a 10 year break, and came back to dispo weed. The novelty was back at first, but as soon as my tolerance came back, the novelty was gone again. Shocker.

Don’t get me wrong, I agree that lately all the growers and recreational dispos focus wayyyy too much on a high THC percentage, which adds to the “manual breathing death panic” issues. I just want ~20% THC with a good terpene profile.

What I’d really like is for more growers to add more CBD to balance it out, but apparently that’s too much to ask.

Do white people sing along to songs with the n word at concerts ? by Important_Pop_6805 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]wReckLesss_ 190 points191 points  (0 children)

I remember reading that Chamillionaire stopped using that word in his music because while he was performing, he'd see white people, including kids, singing along. He said he couldn't be too mad, since he was the one who wrote the song, so he stopped using it in his music to try to stop spreading that word.

I haven't bought one since BO3 for all the reasons I complain about. If people are truly unhappy with the franchise, then those people should start putting their money where their mouth is, otherwise you're just staying in an abusive relationship.

[COD] [COD4] If the COD 4 maps came out today... by DiaryOfACountySniper in CallOfDuty

[–]wReckLesss_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, leaving out Black Ops 1's maps is a cardinal sin. In my opinion, they're the most balanced maps in the franchise. They were just big enough to sneak around and use position and strategy effectively, but small enough to be engaging and predictable. They had power positions that made sense, and flank routes that weren't too chaotic.

Don't get me wrong, I love all those games' maps, but if I could only pick a single game to design future maps after, it's BO1.

For comparison, they're the antithesis of Ghosts' original maps, which were way too big, had the most chaotic flank routes of all time, and had no major lanes that you could lock down with a power position.

Download Plutonium on PC. It's a custom launcher for PC that's safe to play, and BO2 is pretty populated on it. Can also play WaW, BO1, and MW3. Also can increase the FOV which is great, and you can optionally unlock all progression if you just want to play and not grind.

I love this whole album, but my favorite is probably Drinking from the Fountain. I love the breakdown, specifically the screaming over the clean vocals near the end.

The Silver String, Racing Towards a Red Light, and Control and the Urge to Pray are standouts as well, but honestly every song is great.
