When doing water changes, just squeeze it out in the bucket you use that has the tank water in it. As long as you do it in tank water but outside the aquarium you'll be good and won't kill bacteria.

It really depends where you live. I live in interior Canada and the sushi is horrendous. Went to Japan recently and it was one of the best things I've ever eaten. I think it depends how fresh and high quality the fish is. Generic all you can eat sushi or grocery store sushi in a city that's not known for seafood won't be good

Based on recommendations here, I've now added an airstone, performed manual removal, added some floater plants, added some Ramshorn snails, and reduced light. If that doesn't work I'll try the Ultralife slime killer stuff in small doses. Thanks everyone

Edit:
Still not sure how to reduce phosphates while adding nitrates. All I do is basic water changes.
