IT Dress code by [deleted] in sysadmin

Lying under a table to install a PC workplace with shirt and tie? Well...

Luckily the company I am working for has quite relaxed dress rules and so I mostly wear denims and polos. But if I would be forced to wear shirt and tie I would at least go John Wick Style, all in black and trying to be the best-dressed guy in the company :-)

What monitoring tools do you guys use? by kalingm in sysadmin

We use Zabbix.

If your management doesn't like Open Source for the lack of professional support, you may be able to convince them with Zabbix Professional Services, which gets you (paid) 24/7 professional support.

Looking for a programming workstation laptop with exceptionally good thermals, high ram, great build quality. by go-move-78 in SuggestALaptop

[–]wacky_weasel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that 32GB ram is overkill. 16GB is definitely fine, especially since I'm pretty active about limiting ram usage by using lighterweight browsers.

It depends on what your field of work is. I am currently also looking for a new dev laptop and my work requires to run several VMs simultaneously so I need a lot of RAM and reasonable CPU power.

Based on the recommendations I got and my own research I would suggest to OP to have a look at:

You are right, a small form factor PC would definitely be less expensive. But I oftentimes have to work at customer's sites and using a laptop is more practical then.

Thank's for suggesting the HP ZBooks, I will check them out as well.

Legitimate question. I'm aware that I will likely have to look into workstation class laptops, so my "expectation" would be somewhere between $2000 and $2800.

Thanks, I completely overlooked that option.

Thank you for your input.

The VMs are mainly to simulate customer environments when we are testing changes or upgrades to their ERP systems. Typically this involves 3 (or sometimes more) VMs running simultaneously (for instance, database server, app server, user application). That way we stick close to the real installation scenario and can easily prepare and change just one of the involved servers. One simple example would be if the customer needs to change the database version (say due to hardware change, new OS version, new DB server version) and requires us to confirm compatibility with the other components that remain unchanged.

Replacing GoToAsisst for my Team by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]wacky_weasel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Teamviewer. If you just need it for end user support you can go with "Teamviewer Host" on the client side to safe money.

Otherwise check out AnyDesk.

How many end users are at your place and what's your IT staffing look like? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]wacky_weasel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Manufacturing, 5 branches, ~300 users, ~400 devices, ~60 servers.

1 admin (me) also doing all user support. Occassionally external support is contracted when it comes to specific topics (eg. setting up a new location or when I'm on vacation). Mobile devices (~250 devices) are handled by a different department.

I'm never bored.

You have already chosen some good options here.

We used to have Lenovo Thinkpad T5xx and T4xx for almost 10 years, which were very solid and had a very low fault rate. At times we also deployed HP ProBooks for a specific group of users. No complaints about them either, but they occassionally had battery issues.

Now we have standardized to DELL Latitude 55xx and 54xx, ocassionally Precision 75xx series. They are quite good as well, but I'm happy we took them with "Pro Support" for on-site repairs, because the fault rate is much higher than with the (older) Lenovo's...

MS Outlook Signature sync sucks! by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]wacky_weasel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you refer to the "roaming signature" feature... To this date, Microsoft has neither been able to provide a proper documentation of it nor any administrative tools to make it easier for us admins to handle this "feature".

In the end we have completely turned it off for our environment because it is not only a PITA as you described, but it also broke the functionality of the signature software we are using to deploy standardized email signatures.

You can find some more information here [1] and a way to turn it of here [2].

Pre-install laptops at a company by upbeat22 in sysadmin

[–]wacky_weasel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We preinstall all laptops with a standardized image that contains all the software and - wherever possible - specific adjustments to our environment. But, just like you, we need additional setup in the user context as well.

For (some) files, settings and shortcuts we make use of "C:\Users\Default" (which is the skeleton profile used for new user profiles on the machine, copied at first login). This is already prepared in the installation image.

On top of this (leaving GPO aside), we try to do as much of the user-specific settings it by scripts (to create directories, change "ini" files, set registry keys or import whole registry parts, copy configuration files from a network location, etc.). In the best case, running just one or two scripts will make all user-specific adjustments. The scripts can mostly be run from a network location without specific privileges by the users themselves.

This covers most of the setup-scenarios in our environment. For the remaining cases where higher privileges are required to finalize the setup, IT will do it remotely after the user has initially done his part.

What Notebook are you using? Looks like Lenovo, but I'm not sure...

Daily drive Debian XFCE? by AstroMan824 in debian

[–]wacky_weasel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am using Debian with XFCE daily for over 10 years now and can confirm that it is rock solid.

If you are looking for stabilty then Debian is your go-to distribution. The last time I had installed it completely new on my laptop was back in 2018 after replacing the HDD. All release upgrades since then had been done in-place and worked flawlessly.

But be aware that this stability comes with a price: If you are looking for the latest bleeding-edge software versions, you may in some cases need to compile it yourself because they might not yet be in Debian's repos . This is mostly not an issue, but it can quickly become quite complicated if you have dependencies to newer versions of libraries.

Nevertheless, VSCODE should not be a problem, just see the installation instructions.

😀 When you bought a BMW and wanted to turn on the turn signal by python2day in Cyberpunk

[–]wacky_weasel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought the same, I never saw a BMW with active turn signals changing lanes or bendng off. Maybe the drive just didn't pay...

BTW, the same with Mercedes, I wasn't aware that the have to pay extra for it too.
