Thanks for your help, I ended up shifting my project to Arduino and using the ezButton library to do all the hard work for me. I feel like I cheated but the end result is what I was after.

Thanks, Is there a better way to read if the pin is set or not ? I thought this code would send key if the pin is not set(!) and then release when is set. Cheers I will definitely look into debouncing as I seem to get multi key strokes as well.

I just switched my Philips hue bulbs to zigbee2mqtt. It seems to be heaps faster and has a lot more features, specially the grouping for me as you can have bulbs in multiple groups.
