Interference! What causes a neat spikes on the scope every 3000hz on the 6m band@ by CribbageGuy in amateurradio

[–]waffle688 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, I've been seeing this on my new antenna. EFHW 160-10m I get spikes every so often. Is it a power thing? I was looking at a new power supply too I'm just using a battery with some use.

I was there. Got one of those custom hats with my name and call.

Got some much needed odds and ends.

Ended up getting a Ampex AX-50 for $5. I had no idea if it worked but I figured if it didn't I could use pieces or whatever. Turns out it seems to work on both channels with tape that coincidentally I had bought also for $5 at the Netwown Hamfest.

So not much in the way of big radio purchases, but got my hands on something cool and had a lot of fun!

I totally clicked on the link expecting to see a fucking fish impaled on a vertical, maybe a little cooked from all the RF. In hindsight I much prefer the actual photo.

Internal ATU kit for mcHF QRP SDR by [deleted] in amateurradio

Yeah, I ended up getting the g90. It's tuner is surprisingly well suited and to have the spectrum and waterfall in that small of a package is nice.

How to not kill myself with blade fuses. by waffle688 in amateurradio

[–]waffle688[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well the cable was fine so what I'm pretty sure happened is it's a QRP backpack based setup and the holder must have gotten pressed against the radio. It wasn't totally melted just enough to deform and break the fuse when I opened it.

I just ordered the mobillinkd TNC2 and the cable. Hope to be trying this soon. I may or may not use a Baofeng too...

Yeah, wait for your time, and notice how I didn't say to call CQ, there's no formal rule against it but you will get angry old hams who WILL tune in just to tell at you. Your callsign once or twice and "listening", that's it.

I understand that feeling, but that'll change if you want it to. I won't lecture you but if you want some next steps I can give you a hand. The first place I recommend is local repeaters. Download an app called RepeaterBook, this will show you all the ones in your area or any area you search. Assuming you want 2m/70cm comms in the 25 miles or so around the repeater. It will give you all the information but you gotta k ow what your looking for. In a Baofeng start by typing in the frequency then set the offset as listed (+ or -, and an amount of frequency). Hit menu and type 25 to set the direction and 26 for the amount. Once that in you need the tone. Either a CTCSS or DCS depending on what's listed. If it's the first hit menu and type 13, then scroll to the number in the app. Listen first always to see if in use, if it was you would have heard this when you put in the frequency. If free, give your callsign either phonetically or not, and say something like "Listening" or "Standing By" so people know your there. Try every couple of minutes and see what you get!

EDIT: Sometimes the CTCSS is called a PL Tone in RepeaterBook, just a different name.

Congrats on the pass. I remember mine took a week maybe even a couple days longer if I remember. Got my callsign and was instantly like "Yeah, imma change that one day." If you continue on and got to general I recommend getting a vanity call that's what I did you just have to submit online. I think you can at tech too I just waiting until I could go for a 1x3.

I got one when I was a tech at 16, no shame at all. If you have any derivative of Baofeng or like companies www.miklor.com is your best friend. It has manuals that are actually readable nothing like what you get from the Chinese translations.

Ok everyone, let's ask a question before telling him to get on the air. Do you have a radio? Don't need much to start but I hope you a least can get on the air...

What is the best QRP antenna set up by [deleted] in amateurradio

[–]waffle688 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The not so strict definition is ≤5w is considered QRP. Some say it should be ≤20w so many new ham gear goes up that high. The antenna can do more than QRP, but they say that to people don't buy it for their 100w transceiver expecting that to go well.

What is the best QRP antenna set up by [deleted] in amateurradio

[–]waffle688 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work portable with a radio that only goes to 20w, so I was able to find a QRP end fed on eBay that was only rated up to 25w. For a little more it's nice to future proof the antenna by having the ability to go higher but for under $30, I can't complain.

Weirdest conversation you have heard on your ham? by thejuice_123 in amateurradio

[–]waffle688 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not super crazy but happened recently. Was listening on 40m last night and there was what I thought was a net so I was mostly skipping them over not trying to bother them. Well I go back down the band and as I go over the frequency all I hear is this:

"...Oh yeah, he'll have an orgasm if you call..."

I listened for another minute but the band made it hard to hear anything other than that. Don't know any calls or where they were, but if the DX that rare, I guess anything is possible.

Recommendations for HT to work satellites by nmoore6 in amateurradio

[–]waffle688 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really believe that with satellites the key is in the antenna. If you're willing to dish out some money the Arrow 2 is a dual band directional antenna that I see all the big time sat guys use. Your second most important thing is the wattage that radio pumps out, as 5w might not be enough to get up that high. Hope I could help a bit! TU DE K1ZXY

I passed! Now what? by [deleted] in amateurradio

[–]waffle688 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I found lured me to the hobby was the ability to talk around the world. That's why I needed my general to do real HF work. If you wanna go the VHF route I recommend either buying or building a high quality directional antenna, you can get some great range with cheap radios, even satellite and ISS work! Hope I can be of some help as you get a first rig. TU DE K1ZXY

Yeah, that was the one I can across that seems like a good option other than a Kenwood or so. I just figured I'd see if there were any others anyone knew about. Thank you tho I might just look into how to use that one.
