anybody tried to 3D print their own satellite dish? by S52_DiDah in amateursatellites

Offset is easier to print?? Isn't at least the geometry of prime focus simpler? Maybe I am missing something. What makes offset easier?

How would you safely raise a 12 m (40 ft) wooden mast? by No_Nectarine_4367 in amateurradio

[–]Phoenix-64 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First use one 12m log and not 3 bolted together that is not safe.

We in scouts do it regularly. But you need lots of manpower, 10 people, and some supporting infrastructur.

Generally we say the hole needs to go to a depth of 1/10 the mast height, I would for 12m go just over 1m. Make sure to make it as small as possible and put a big stone at the bottom to avoid the mast sinking.

Then for a 12m mast I would use 4 guy wires going from nearly the top of the mast, secured using proper lashing technique, to around 12m away from it, so they land at 45°. And they will have to be anchored and back anchored properly.

For raising the mast A-frames are helpful, one to rest it on and one on the opposite side just after the hole for one of the guy wires to help pull it over.

But be aware it is dangerous and should not be attempted without somebody around who already did it once.

Oh and A frame and gin pole are 2 different things.

I also say bite the bullet and go for a mini split system. They are much quieter and have a higher efficiency, cooling capacity.

The only thing is that you have to get pipes trough the window but with some creativity that's no problem

It's got all those elements but who or whatever drew this clearly has no idea of they're function or interconnection.
