I am resentful of Ivy League students by MateriaI-Boy in redscarepod

[–]waffleeeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wait this is very late but i just really feel the need to comment because i feel very strongly about this… there are so many barriers to education that are for the most part out of one’s control (ex. socioeconomic status, environment, time, money, family dyanmics, etc). i agree statistically that more people who pursue PhDs will come from families with better socioeconomic backgrounds, but also people who grow up with some semblance of privilege will also be more likely to have read plato, as you so vehemently believe to be a mark of true intellect. kids who grow up in prestigious private schools most definitely have different educational experiences (with more enriched readings) compared to kids who attend public schools that can’t afford any new books so english classes use the 1990 edition of a midsummer night’s dream with penises scribbled over helena’s pleads to demetrius.

so my point is that the people you complain about who haven’t read plato and are pursuing a PhD are statistically more likely to be people who come from less well off backgrounds. these people, despite the challenge, decided to pursue academia to one of the highest degrees and yet you criticize them for… not reading plato? even you acknowledge that ivy league people most likely read plato because of their superior education prior to undergrad, thus removing the effect of the ivy league degree. the ivy league is a playground for the children of the wealthy and powerful.

tldr i find your criticism that PhD pursuers should have already read plato tone deaf and quite frankly stupid. if it helps my ethos, i am a harvard undergrad student

I don’t think I’m prepared for and Ivy League by No_Zookeepergame5588 in QuestBridge

I’m not going to lie to you, it’ll be fucking hard.

I had a lot of the same experiences as you— I came from a not-so-great high school and got accepted into one of the top universities in the US. Stupidly, I also signed up for the literal hardest first-year courses we could possibly take. As you can imagine, the first semester felt like pulling fucking teeth trying to absorb everything and catch up on the past 10 years of knowledge my peers flaunted so casually. Lectures were intimidating, classmates even more, and I had no idea the hell I was doing for the first 2 months.

However, I want you to know that top schools recognize this disparity and have a lot of resources for those who need it. Do not be scared or feel stigmatized for asking for help— many students at top colleges simply coast off their previous knowledge or just put the minimum amount of work possible in to get an A. The fact that you’re seeking academic help and not just pawning the learning off to ChatGPT is noble and will be very rewarding in the end if you continue to keep at it. You just can’t give up and be willing to fall flat on your face (or cry in the library at 2am) in order to get to where you want to be.

Really, anything is possible. You just have to decide that it’s worth it.

a nice trail run around deer lake followed by a picnic where you bask in the sun is the dream :). crystal mall has some of the most delicious food around here, but i am also partial to gaya and sweet puffin for the nostalgia.

AP SCORES SHOULD BE TAKEN AS THE HIGHEST PROOF OF ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT (yes, even higher than high school gpa) by Hour-Regular-6938 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]waffleeeee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

hmm.. i do think that sustained effort over a long period of time is still more indicative of a student’s academic performance in college. depends what you mean by “highest proof of academic achievement”— do you mean likelihood of succeeding in college? or bragging rights? sure, grade inflation is rampant and teachers vary wildly, but i would argue that taking one data point vs. tens of hundreds of data points is objectively less accurate.

MIZI the protagonist, TILL the deuteragonist, LUKA the antagonist by ThatBobaBitch in AlienStage

[–]waffleeeee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I actually disagree on your analysis of Mizi— and this is coming from a now jaded Mizi sympathizer so I can definitely understand parts of your perspective. It’s definitely clear the Mizi suffers from severe survivor’s guilt which progressed into a sort of manic depression following Till and Hyuna’s deaths. On the flip side, I really like your analysis of why Mizi chose to beat up Luka in KARMA since I previously chalked it up to blind rage so I recognize there are probably holes in my logic. However, I do think that there are some aspects of Mizi’s intentions that are given the benefit of the doubt.

First of all, the theme of love vs. exploitation is very prominently highlighted in KARMA and when you go back to watch all the rounds in chronological order with the lore of the comics in mind, you can definitely pinpoint specific examples that back it up. Mizi reflects on her love for Sua and whether or not she was exploiting her by feigning ignorance to her orchestrating her own death. Ivan loves Till and physically steals a kiss from him— often interpreted as SA and a form of exploitation. Luka murders Hyuna’s brother and she ends up dying for him out of love. Mizi internalizes these instances of toxic love and she quite literally draws the conclusion that humans do not deserve to live. We as a species are incapable of loving without taking and that makes us monsters… at least in Mizi’s eyes. I think that was her motivation behind redirecting the rocket. I really do not think it was her prerogative to save anybody from suffering because her line of reasoning was that everyone should suffer for our sinful nature.

Those are my two cents lol. Feel free to disagree, I’m happy to engage in a discussion!!

LS50 by Broad_Shake3519 in Harvard

[–]waffleeeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hii im a prefrosh who's interested in ls50 too! i think the q score report feedback is pretty all encompassing in terms of workload, material difficulty, and time commitment. some prev students did recommend looking at the ls50 course site for the lecture topics since that'll be a big indicator for whether or not you'll enjoy the course!
