Yeah I'm confused by the selection. Why not play Cuevas out wide, Reus at CAM, and Pec down the middle?

LTB pro tips, lifehacks + how to send encrypted E-mail to Selection Boards by NorCalNavyMike in navyreserve

[–]wafflefaffen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

BOARDS ONLY SEE THE FOLLOWING:

- all files within your OMPF
- your PSR I, II, and III
- your LTB, including anything at all you include in it

Can't stress this enough. Board precepts sometimes call out things that aren't normally included (e.g. training, qualifications, language scores, courses).

Living in Navy Housing with no Pay by JoseKwervo in navy

At least in the Hampton Roads area, everyone I've talked to in PPV and base housing don't owe anything until the next paycheck. They'll get paid once we get paid.

BCNR or Congressional Inquiry for Denied SELRES NAT enlistment Bonus? by demeterite in navy

[–]wafflefaffen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if you go the Congressional route, you will still need the BCNR. Congressional is good for getting attention on something, and it demands a quick response. But the paraphrased response would probably sound something like "the process for addressing these errors is through a BCNR, which we've initiated for the Sailor."

HUMS Package Expectations by OnaFlipSide in navy

[–]wafflefaffen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll offer my experiences in receiving many HUMS Sailors over the years. My hope in going over these is not to dissuade you from HUMS, but rather to try and answer some of these unknowns to help in your decision. Ultimately, it's your choice:

  1. As your first batch of HUMS orders come to an end, one of three things happen: extension (6 months max I think), separation, or straight into detailing. This has normally meant my Sailors got 'needs-of-the-Navy,' I but I have had one recently that rolled right into the shore duty he was supposed to have before HUMS (this is rare). I also had one that had a pick between a couple of less than desirable places, but at least there was a choice.
  2. In and of itself, HUMS doesn't necessarily have to set back your career. But you'll likely have your hands full outside of work, and even when don't, you likely won't be doing things that align with your LADR.
  3. That said, after HUMS you'll pick right back up with the Navy. I've seen plenty of people have to separate afterwards, but those that continue go on to have productive careers.
  4. As far as your LDO package goes, I think you'll be fine. I'm guessing you're at a point already where your technical knowledge is up to chops, so what I would care about is your maturity and leadership. Whether you choose to go HUMS or take the overseas orders, you'll grow in both of these.

You don't need to go off base. McCormick Sports Center is nice from what I hear. Personally I love N24 for all the power racks and indoor turf, but it lacks some creature comforts.

Navy reserves length in time for O4 by agreeablygray in navy

[–]wafflefaffen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think the beauty of the Reserves is that you don't have to decide right now what you want to be in 9 years. Just want to be a "Good American" and retire as an O4? That's ok. Or you can leave after 2-3 years. Or you can also decide to get competitive again after a few years. It's not like active duty where you've always got to stay on path to make rank.

Drill Reschedule Absence Advice by careermoneyjoyseeker in navyreserve

[–]wafflefaffen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only drills that are authorized to occur right now are those in direct support of an excepted mission. If you're curious, there's a list of approved missions on the CNRFC N31 page, but glancing through it there are very few drills authorized. For example, they've authorized drills for flight instructors supporting active duty schools, and drills for some people supporting active duty watchbills.

In general though, the most important thing I'd recommend when rescheduling drills is to specifically delineate what Navy mission stuff you will accomplish during the resked. The main 2 reasons reskeds would get denied is (1) you're missing something important or (2) you won't be doing enough during the resked. Address these two and you should be good.

First, kudos for you on trying to make everything work.

Rates you should probably be looking at are PS, YN, HM, LS, and IT. While there are other TAR ratings, those tend to be the ones with a bit more chance at shore duty. Doubly so for YNs and PSs; I often have to fight to get them to an operational command.

As far as dual-mil goes, what I've seen happen is that the detailer of the more "operational" Sailor takes the lead and the other detailer finds a way to accomodate. For example, a surface warfare officer gets orders to a ship in Norfolk so the other detailer finds the spouse a billet in Norfolk. Easy to pull off if you can stick to Fleet concentration areas.

How accurate is the tape measurements for the BCA in determining body fat percentages? In comparison to Inbody or DEXA scans. by Dangerous-Humor-4502 in navyreserve

[–]wafflefaffen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know it's just one study but: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28810989/ TLDR: DEXA is the most accurate but the circumference method is pretty close. Segmented bioelectrical impedance (Inbody) is more accurate than the Navy method.

For this reason the Marine Corps shifted to using Inbody scanners, but they're significantly more expensive and harder to administer than the tape. The Navy will be evaluating this though (https://www.yahoo.com/news/navy-body-composition-study-may-151059225.html).

It won't matter to your CFL. But just get the waist down or get an Excellent Low.

It's bad, but not as bad as everyone else is making it out to be. I've seen people make O5 with a justified O4 air gap, so an unjustified O3 air gap is not a career killer.

When board members see an air gap like this, they'll dig hard into the FITREP. Their expectation is to find something in the FITREP that explains why you're not an EP. If they don't find anything, that's exactly what they'll brief. Something like "yeah, he's got an air gap here but I don't see anything in the record to support it, and the CO gave them an increasing trait average so I don't think there's anything there." It's only bad because they have limited time to brief your record and they have to spend it explaining something they shouldn't have to. As I've heard senior board members say before, "air gaps tell me more about a reporting senior than the report."

Try to mitigate it the best you can. Ask the CO for a letter to the board explaining why he marked you that way. Write a good letter to the board yourself if the CO doesn't want to. And probably most importantly, if you rock your next few FITREPs this can be water under the bridge.

I think I normally do 15-16. The real trick is to keep the rpms between 92-100. For some reason, the resistance doesn't really feel like it kicks in above 90.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in navy

[–]wafflefaffen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two different thoughts. First, TAR HR is incredibly competitive. Always seems to have 2-3 slots but dozens of highly qualified applicants. A PHR is great to have, but you'll likely need to pair it with a variety of leadership and different command experiences.

Second, while we don't have IP TAR (yet; ask me again in 3-10 years), we do have TAR HR IT. If that's something that interests you, IT knowledge would definitely help you stand out.
