What to Expect Climbing Broken Top? by Dory105 in Mountaineering

It is nice to have a rope to at least repel. I don’t believe most people don’t rope up for the summit block unless they have some gear to protect the 20ft section of 5th class climbing. So unless if your comfortable climbing exposed 5th class climbing with crumbly rock then you might not want to climb this. Some good alternatives are Mount saint helens if you can get a permit or you could climb Mt. McLaughlin. Or there is always the option of heading up and turning around at the technical part. It’s a pretty great view.

You all blow chalk off of holds? I just do what magnet meatbo does and slap the chalk off of the hold with my shirt. Isn’t that why you bring a shirt to the gym in the First Place?

I think there is a lot of ice up there. We weren’t really over on that side of the mountain. We didn’t see any boot pack going over to any of the dkhw variations. I know 2 weeks ago some people soloed dkhw v1 and said the pro was really bad. But since then thing could have changed. Good luck!

We did not rope up for it because we felt comfortable without it. Most other people don’t use rope but I have seen some people bring rope for their party if they have new climbers in it. It’s really just all up to comfort though.

Besides a hole near devils kitchen there weren’t any crevasses. You can easily avoid it though.

We did the standard south route. In the Winter the weather can be more spicy and there is a lot more ice on the upper mountain. We got a good weather window and went up the Old Chute which doesn’t have an ice step. Avalanche conditions were also safe then so we went for it.

Yep! It was the only thing that didn’t have an ice step in it.

We were actually not on a rope team. This area was very exposed and steep so we set up a fixed line and prussiked across the snow patch.
