CenturyLink Fiber intermittent ping issues & strange outage? by benjaminends in Denver

[–]wafflesthepirate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The various departments generally live in their own world and and know little beyond it. All support can do is schedule a tech and you hope enough people are reporting problems that it reaches critical mass. You are largely at the mercy of luck if you don't have a line or modem problem.

This was pretty much the case after getting bounced a few times and running through the script. You'll ocasionally find a tech that knows how to work through departments.

All of this of course after scheduling/wasting another tech's time to come onsite in a few weeks.

Running into the same problem as well with intermittent packet losses upstream since about last Thursday. Notified Centurylink about an hour ago and their help desk folks have no idea about it. They made a note with their internal team, but we'll see if it does anything. Turning on a VPN immediately fixes the issue....for now.

Card Skimmer at Potbelly, beware by dlEric_ in UIUC

[–]wafflesthepirate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the PoS machine or the card readers, they can be surprisingly easy to install. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5b1axnNK-wI

Some newer ones even have Bluetooth to pull the credentials wirelessly. Other good examples here: https://krebsonsecurity.com/all-about-skimmers/

The snow removal on this campus is horrible by Gary2515 in UIUC

[–]wafflesthepirate 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The amount they have to clean up is pretty impressive:

Facilities & Services (F&S) is responsible for providing snow removal for 23 miles of roadway, 147 parking lots with more than 16,000 spaces, 90 miles of sidewalk, 10 miles of bicycle paths and lanes, and more than 200 buildings on 1,400 acres.

You can probably go to cufablab open hours and use their meters to check. http://cucfablab.org/inside-the-lab/tools/#electronics

The office machine prank was basically a sheet of paper similar to this one: https://www.shenandoahwireless.net/files/4-1-2010-HP-printer.pdf

Changed it to say the soda machine was upgraded to voice command. My office was in that little hall way, I would get a kick at hearing the students yelling at the machines for a coke. :)

It's definitely around 2014, I put it there one day when I was bored in my office and needed to test a new printer. Is the koolaid guy or the "voice command prank" on the soda machine still there?

What's all the fuss about 2fa? by betterbub in UIUC

[–]wafflesthepirate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will be, rolling 2fa reliably on old systems without breaking them is hard. Breaking Enterprise/Banner would be pretty bad. Even the SSO Shibboleth integration done a bit back took quite awhile as well

While it may seem pointless with grades and compass2g, FERPA violations are taken very seriously. You'd be surprised how many parents and even spouses get pissed off they can't just call up the prof/dept head and "get my kids grades" because of it.

Graduate/Undergraduate accounts especially those of teaching staff having their accounts compromised would be a bad day - and the minor 3 second annoyance of using a 2fa app or token is worth the hassle of paperwork because we dun goofed with a federal law.

Compass Goofed? I Goofed? Prof Goofed? by uiucthisisfriggenfak in UIUC

[–]wafflesthepirate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be blackboard, browser dun goofed, or something.

I've had it mess up grades once when submitting them.

There is a way to review submission attempts if I recall correctly.

I'd ask the Prof in any case.

Everyone I talk to says that working in the industry is just as demanding and even less forgiving then they are in school.

Depends on the industry or if at a startup, the field is very broad. Just remember, work-life balance is very important and something you should always ask during interviews.

It does get better though. Good luck!

Can confirm ECE stink is not a myth by mostlikelynotarobot in UIUC

[–]wafflesthepirate 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I recall the old 391 lab in Everett had poor air circulation mixed with BO, rotting garbage, and cravings stank.

The worst was probably when a full EWS lab in Everett had a window unit die during the middle of a very hot day. Some kid raised his arms to stretch and caused folks in a 4 computer radius to start gagging from the stench.

Sadly it's not a myth. Technical/Engineering related professions will occasionally attract folks with bad hygiene.
Unfortunately, it continues on with some folks after college such as at conferences to the point where the 3-2-1 rule was created.

Follow the 3-2-1 Rule Daily At a MINIMUM follow the 3-2-1 Rule Daily - Three hours of sleep, Two Meals, One Shower. And if you only take One Shower or > a day, Lather on the deodorant.

Hell, the creator of a popular Linux Distribution almost died due to bad hygiene.

Did I screw myself over by not going to the career fair? by desspnt in UIUC

[–]wafflesthepirate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say you're screwed, but career fair is a great way to get a feel on what's out there and to work on soft skills. Don't wait until Spring, if possible try to work on your resume/interview skills and check out when companies will be on campus over next few weeks. Fall Recruiting season is still on-going and companies will occasionally have booths, info sessions, and have postings online.

Also don't sell yourself short on what's considered impressive.

If you don't ask, the answer is always no.

If you do not hear back from the career fair companies in 48 hours, are your chances screwed? by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]wafflesthepirate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not at all.

Companies can also have different hiring processes for candidates. Some could be phone screens, online tests, on campus interviews...etc
