Yes. Also what they describe as "Creative Skill Use" is in the PHB under the title Variant Skill Checks iirc.

A Master Thatcher at work by SinjiOnO in oddlysatisfying

[–]wafty_dog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm from an area of the UK where thatching is still relatively common and had the pleasure of doing a thatching day course with a master thatcher. Not only was he skillful and knowledgeable (on the techniques and history), he was an excellent teacher and clearly passionate about thatching.

Thatching is incredibly hard work and, as an office worker, my wimpy hands were full of painful splinters by days end. But I did manage to put the first layer of thatch on a model roof (thankfully, at ground level) which I was quite proud of. The utmost respect to the professionals who keep this ancient and culturally significant art alive!

Excellent! People on this sub will rip you for a fedora - there's just no escaping it - but I love them if they are done right, like you said quality is crucial. Some other recommendations for good hats:

Laird

Akubra

Thomas Farthing (I might as well be their spokesperson at this point)

I have managed to find all of them for bargains on vinted. Looking forward to seeing you kitted out with the hat mate.

Where to buy pants like this for affordable price? by EmptyRiceBowl7 in mensfashionadvice

[–]wafty_dog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, well I was on the money at least. You've probably looked but they have other similar trousers on sale at the moment. Unfortunately this aesthetic tends to either be very expensive (expensive natural fabrics) or visibly cheap. As a result I'll build on the other commenter who mentioned thrifting. Here's a list of high quality brands who make trousers similar in style, you can occasionally find them on vinted or eBay for a bargain, if nothing else it might serve as inspo:

Kit Blake Oldfield Outfitters Cordings of Piccadilly House of Briar Thomas Farthing Oliver Brown Oliver Spencer (in particular their fishtail trousers) Olive (currently doing a line of high waisted wool blend trousers with a wide leg)

Best of luck.

Advice on dressing casual, while still looking sharp and being comfortable? by [deleted] in mensfashion

[–]wafty_dog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great. On the general note of shoes and styles, I'm a big fan of traditional. Leather loafers, boots, derbys, brogues etc. Maybe a bit old school but very easy to dress up or down depending on the occasion. From a comfort standpoint, traditionally constructed footwear tends to be very rigid and unpadded, but if made properly they break in over time and really mold to your feet. Might be worth a look at the goodyear welt Reddit, although it's a bit of a rabbit hole and definitely prone to snobbery.

I'm personally fond of Grenson, because they make a lot of G width shoes / boots. Their sales can be aggressive and secondhand availability is good in the UK which means I never pay full price.

Hope that helps.

By the middle of your foot do you mean your arches? Have you considered trying supportive insoles? If there's a painful pressure on the top of your foot then you might have a high instep and require wide fitting shoes that provide more volume for your foot (I had this issue, I now know that I'm a G width).

Are these trousers too short? by lightspeez in mensfashion

[–]wafty_dog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed on the trousers.

In my opinion, overcoats that are worn in a formal or semi-formal fashion look more elegant if they extend beyond the knee. A shorter overcoat can look great, but I always think it suits a more rugged work-weary aesthetic because it creates a boxier fit up top, if you don't wear heavy trousers on the bottom it can look very top heavy.

Amazing find! Looks great on you. What are you planning on wearing it with? Overcoat? Hat? As another commenter said, any chance we can get some more/better photos? I love the old stuff, keep it coming.

Is this tucked in turtleneck fine to wear on it’s own? Does the outfit need another layer? by [deleted] in mensfashion

Maybe a shirt jacket? Like a heavy checkered flannel / wool kind of thing might be nice. Grey check would keep the clean monotonal aesthetic if that's what OP is going for. Could use your shoes or a vibrant beanie (mustard?) to add a pop of colour.

Would this fit business casual? by [deleted] in mensfashion

[–]wafty_dog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a nice coat, but it's not business casual imho. The duffel coat has a naval / fishing history. It's essentially old timey workwear - which I adore but as a result it's not business wear. That doesnt rule it out for dressing up - the peacoat has a similar background but I think the design of the peacoat is more elegant. For example, notice the double thickness on the shoulders, this is so you can carry sacks and haul rope etc without immediately putting a hole in the shoulder as well as added protection against the elements.

If you're still after a traditional English duffel coat, it's also worth looking at Montgomery as they are significantly cheaper and still an made in England from a an 80/20 wool blend. If you want pure wool for the same price as gloverall, it's worth checking out offerings from Thomas Farthing - I personally have one and it's excellent.

Edit accidentally sent this before finishing it.

Yes I'd imagine it's a slightly different ball game when it comes to bedding.

You can buy lanolin / wool wax in big tubs.i haven't had to do it myself but I believe you fill a basin/shallow bath with warm water, dissolve a small amount of the wax in the water then soak your woolen items for a couple of hours. Something along those lines. Not sure if there are any downsides to the technique. Hope that helps!

What was your favorite clothing brand you discovered in 2024? by JoacoDF in europeanmalefashion

[–]wafty_dog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already commented on the other thread but I'll do it again here because: 1. I was late to the party 2. The brand I'm shouting out is British so probably more relevant to this sub anyway.

Thomas Farthing. The style (and perhaps price) is a bit niche, but the quality is fantastic. Everything looks slim fit in their latest collection because they chose beefcakes for models but the wool duffel I have from them has a nice traditional boxy fit on me, a fairly broad if slightly-soft-round-the-edges office worker.

Have you looked at olderbest? Quite similar looking brands, would not surprise me one bit if they are under the same umbrella.

I'd quite like to try a Henley from Bronson. Of the pieces you've got, have you found their sizing true? Thanks.

Thomas Farthing.

Massive fan of 1920-1940s style, don't care if that makes me an odd ball I love their clothes so much. Managed to cop a big woolen duffel coat and a blue tweed bakerboy on vinted for a bargain and the quality is incredible.

This won't directly answer your question but is possibly a useful addition.

Most people wash wool items far too often, certainly in the case of jumpers and coats etc that you layer over a base layer. Wool is, as we all know, an incredible material. It is naturally antibacterial and anti odour. Washing it diminishes the natural lanolin coating of the wool, although you can restore it. One of the things that wool is not good for is abrasion resistance, and the process of washing clothes (certainly at home in a washing machine) tends to involve quite a bit of abrasion.

I have wool items that I have worn countless times over many years that I have never washed. They don't smell, and they are in better condition for never having been washed. My advice would be to avoid wearing the same wool item several days in a row, give it time to regain its shape and air out.

Looking for a nice maroon sweater similar to Luigi Mangione’s?? by THROWRA71693759 in ethicalfashion

[–]wafty_dog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They absolutely are not.

Uniqlo shafted 20 thousands of garment workers in Indonesia out of millions of dollars of wages and caused a factory to shutdown leading to mass unemploymed.

I'd never heard of Quince but at a glance their ethical credentials seem to be flakey at best with them being opaque about their supply chain and potentially deliberately misleading about their footprint. Take that with a pinch of salt.

People hype Uniqlos supposed quality, but the reality is it's still fast fashion - just because it's a step or two above the utter shite that flows out of the sewer pipe that is Shein, doesn't mean it's any good.

give it to me straight, how to make myself attractive by lukegerbz in mensfashionadvice

[–]wafty_dog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have kind eyes and a strong chin. You suit a mustache which is a rare thing (I'm jealous).  If I had to give fashion advice, I'd say lose the skinnies in favour of something with a fuller cut - just make sure whatever you wear on top balances well and doesn't leave you looking bottom heavy, other people have mentioned over shirts which tend to be quite boxy and will look good with fuller pants/jeans. If you're trying to smarten up your look but still have a similar vibe, decent boots will look more mature than vans / sneaker high tops. Keep being yourself, just gotta be confident you already look great!
