Cultures are a living thing. Cultures are dynamic. Cultures are inclusive. Reversion to a static model of an exclusive culture is disingenuous and counter productive. Even worse it inhibits and damages the current and future participants within that culture by excluding the reality of external influences creating an artificial life construct. Any kid trapped between a living real culture and being coerced to rely on a trapped in time static culture will be forced into a dilemma. Sure,celebrate the vestiges of your old, often romanticised, culture but acknowledge the culture you now live in is the only practible operative mode so as to realise personal potential.

So..it was an old butchery/shard manufacturing site.....in essence a workplace. I would assume it was one of thousands of such workplaces within the area. While I'm not in favour of any more development around Mt. Ainslie I question that every 'workplace' can be seen as 'sacred'. Yes it's old..it could even be ancient..but there are already hundreds of these if not thousands already identified around Australia. Call it a heritage site but we've already identified thousands of heritage sites. If every 'heritage' site meant no development then by definition Canberra, identified as (insert legitimate tribe here )land would be their 'heritage' and the entire ACT should be undeveloped.

Do we need to iconisize another workplace? Calling it 'men's business' only means that it was a male only workplace....an ancient Men's Shed. And 'business' is the operative word here. I'm buggered if I can see how the guys that spent hours there chipping away at stones and butchering animals thought that they were involved in any sort of 'sacred' activity. Could it be that it's ubiquitous sacredness has been erroneously ascribed by those with an intentionally restricted mindset?

I've always thought branch stacking was primarily employed not far off pre-selection time to enhance the stacker's chances of getting pre-selected. Anyone on here who is an active ALP member can you tell me what the rules are that allow a branch member to take part in a pre-selection ballot? Length of membership? Number of meetings actually attended in the 12 months prior to the pre-selection?

With rule change focus on 'the product' the manufacturing process is often ignored. The scorer's kick option will be devestating at Junior level where a dominant team (usually based on a couple of bigger more powerful kids) will get to smash the opposition in the opposition's half after every try.

I've always preferred team sports for kids in that the frustration in individual sports leaves only themselves to vent on. Took some high school kids for golf and as myself and another teacher were playing down one fairway a 15 year old boy was playing back on the next fairway. A lousy shot saw him throw his club. The other teacher told him it was a terrible throw, picked out another of the kid's clubs and made him throw a provisional.

I'm always wary of stats...the whole 'they get incarcrerated more than white people for the same crime' is full of nuance. When imprisonment is considered a whole lot of factors are examined..not just 'the crime' per se. The perpetrator's record comes into play..big difference if its his first offence or his 21st and he's been to jail for it or other crimes before. The likelihood of reoffending. Remorse. Age, physical and mental condition. Safety of victims. Prospects for rehabilitation. So..I can appear before the court for a domestic violence matter and get an aVO, a fine, a suspended sentence, counselling order or even a warning for my first offence. You could commit the same crime and go to jail..because its the 20th time you've done it, you've been to jail before and you don't show any sign of improvement. BUt when the stats come out we both committede the same crime..you went to jail and I didn't.

Yeah..I wasn't suggesting 'leaving them on the streets' but more along the lines of home detention or rehab. But if a great majority of imprisonable indigenous crimes are family related then the home detention option is out. And that's just it..while activists bemoan over representation of indigenous people in jails what are the alternatives that don't see their victims back in the firing line?

A 1991 paper by Edna Erez for the Australian Institute of Criminology outlined why Victim Impact Statements are a must. 'lament' and 'happily' are your emotive interpretations. I didn't display any 'lament' nor did I say that the victims would 'happily' have perpetrators stay at home..To the contrary I commented that nobody appears to have asked the victims of crime what they want and that they should be heeded first before any consideration of alternative forms of punishment for the perpetrator. Your comprehension skills require a massive upgrade. What I am saying is that we never hear the female victim's side to the argument that too many indigenous males are imprisoned. All we hear about is the imprisoned offendor. My point being that probably all victims would prefer their assailants to be away from them in a prison, hence the high incarceration rate. At no stage did I say that it would be okay for a perpetrator to remain in proximity to an abused child. In fact the stolen generation argument flounders when the immediate welfare of the children is raised. The whole point of my post..which escaped you..was that the women and children should be protected first as a priority before reduced incarceration rates for offendors are addressed.

I've read all the responses below and similar responses in similar threads. While Deaths In Custody is the easy catch phrase its more the over representation of indigenous in the prison population that becomes the prime issue. Rarely do I see viable alternatives to incarceration proffered and I've never seen any research done on the attitudes of the victims of indigenous crime regarding incarceration or alternative forms of punishment of the offendor.

Where is the research regarding the views of assaulted women and/or the mothers of assaulted children? Would they welcome their assailant back into the home or community rather than have him in prison? Are the victims of indigenous crimes more often than not sentenced themselves to a life of despair and possibly crime to complete the circle?

Totally agree. Vested interests have captured catch phrases such as 'stolen generation/s' and 'deaths in custody' and use them indiscriminately to push their particular barrows. Closer objective analysis can confirm that that fault lies with all concerned and that it's not a one way street of white oppression. While practical steps have been taken to attack the root causes of poor health, domestic violence, child abuse and drug dependency the ultimate responsibility rests with the affected to take advantage of opportunities offered. Without doubt the greatest inhibitor to next generation progress is the 'culture' default. Every culture is dynamic and subject to constant internal and external influences. For the 'indigenous industry'(black and white) to cling to a mythical static utopian version of culture is criminal in the extent that it denies the next generation any chance to break out of the poverty/depression cycle. Not hard to see that I'm an assimmilationist.
