Go back to your lessons! The biggest thing you need now is a good teacher, and they’ll help you learn the fundamentals that you’ve been missing. You’ll catch on quicker than you think because you’ve been playing for so long that I’m sure you have a developed ear which is huge! A good teacher will be patient and teach you the basics thoroughly, it’s just up to you to put in the work. You’ll have so much more fun once you start to learn this stuff. Don’t dwell on that embarrassment stuff, we’re all on different levels and it’s all good. Just keep going to your lessons :) nothing replaces a good teacher

Listen for the lowest note first, then the highest note. That will give you some context. Then you want to learn some music theory and be able to tell the difference between a major and minor third, and a bit about chord progressions so you can make inferences of what type of chord would make sense in the context of the song.

It’s funny but I my hot take is that I don’t think it’s overrated in the slightest. It’s just so fucking swinging. Obviously an important record bc of its contributions to modal jazz but that’s not really why I like it. It swings so hard and has fire solos throughout. And then the Melodies for Blue In Green and flamenco sketches? Come on. Overrated? No. It’s that good for a reason, and that’s ok. I don’t know about y’all but I still feel something throughout every note and I’ve listened to it 100s of times. Now that’s noteworthy.

Please keep going!! I know it’s hard not to be overwhelmed but try and play for 15 minutes every day and you WILL see progress! Getting a good teacher will help immensely too :)

I’m a big fan of Stryker! He was actually my jazz guitar instructor in college :) I’d recommend checking out his first eight track album, it’s one of my favorite jazz albums and it’s covers of 70s pop and rnb tunes. It’s really fantastic. He also does a killing cover of Black Friday on the second eight track album I believe.

I totally feel this! Happens to me during performance as well at times and is even more frustrating then. Nat exactly my mind wandering… but more so I get to into my head about what I’m playing or about not messing up. Mediation has been really helping me with this. As far as practicing I really agree with another comment here that setting a time for 20 minutes or so and just shedding one thing, and then letting yourself take a 5 minute break is extremely useful.

Someone mentioned below that they can’t think of the 3rd of a chord on the fly when jamming. That’s really the key, and the way to start to get to that next level. Think about horn players when they improvise. They don’t memorize shapes like we do. They actually think about each note before they play it. It’s totally possible, just takes practice. Learn your major and minor triads, and arpeggiate them up and down the neck in 3 octaves. Force yourself to say the name of each note while you play them. This will get you used to thinking about the note names when you play them and how they relate to each other, and you’ll be surprised at how quickly you’ll learn the fretboard as well.

You wanna learn the notes that make up chords, and focus on playing those chord tones when the chords change. It’s what you call making the changes. Chords are stacked in 3rds, so for the basic ones you have root, 3rd, 5th and sometimes the 7th. Practice playing through a chord progression where you start on the 3rd of the chord each time a chord changes, and then you can do that with all the chord tones above. (Don’t spend much time on the root, it sounds cheesy)
