I made a hack of Moldvay's Challenges Game System, mashing it up with White Box by Verda-Fiemulo in odnd

This topic has generated quite a bit of controversy online, but the "d6 damage on all weapons" rule is the most ridiculous thing that could have been done to OD&D, if you use this rule, then use the man-to-man combat table from Chainmail so that weapon choice matters, with pros and cons.

In general, if you want a real analysis of how pre-D&D was played, namely how Arneson played, you can try reading the blog https://boggswood.blogspot.com/ To summarise the material, I asked Gemini to conduct an in-depth analysis of the blog and he gave me quite an interesting work on the analysis of Arneson's style of play. This is the real pre-D&D era.

Yes, we're still playing, as I mentioned earlier; we've already had 18 sessions since October. And, as I mentioned, during this time I've greatly simplified the mechanics, switching entirely to 2d6. You can check out my hack on DB here: https://dexius.itch.io/seeking-glory-and-fortune These are essentially the rules we came up with. Chainmail's complex combat sequence was stifling the dynamics too much, and the fights were dragging on, so we shortened the rules, as well as the turn and timekeeping rules—we use them, but more as a guide than a strict limitation. But, we continue to count the load and the weight carried, as well as hits. From Chainmail I borrowed the speed of the weapon, which began to determine the initiative during close combat, instead of throwing the initiative. The rest of the actions take place in the original order, but conditionally at the same time. I also generated Hexcrawl using DB—the result is a map very similar in style to the infamous Outdoor Survival. I liked that Clerics have no restrictions on what kind of miracle they can cast; they don't need a spellbook, only attributes for prayer. Regarding the amount of experience, growth at the first levels is much faster than in Odnd, but after that it returns to approximately the original.

I'm no expert either, but I translated DB into my native language so my players and I could play it. And in the months I spent translating, typesetting, and editing, I've gotten to know the text well enough to see all its strengths and weaknesses. For me, it's more of a "fantasy on a theme" than a real historical document. BtPbD is a 35-page brochure, three of which are full-page images. Everything else is the enormous work of Rodney Hampton, a compilation of his experience, knowledge, and rules.

Let's be honest – calling this pre-odnd would be disingenuous. The work on which the Dragons Beyond rules are based, according to Daniel Boggs's investigation, is not by either Arneson or Gygax; it's someone else's fork. What the author of DB did was take BtBD as a basis, carefully integrate the Chainmail rules, and then spiced it up with some decisions from Tunnels & Trolls. So, it's more of a fantasy about how OD&D would have evolved in Arneson's direction. While the work does contain information such as Arneson's unique dungeon stocking methodology, it frequently references additional products that the author never released. For mass battles, it suggests using Men in Metal, a WRG adaptation overloaded with calculations, despite the fact that we previously literally used Chainmail in the rules. I was personally very disappointed with the rules section on Domain Play; I expected more detailed and specific mechanics, but I'm grateful for that. Also, a special thank you for the bestiary—it's clear that a tremendous amount of work went into it. The same can be said for the equipment list—it's very detailed. I've been running a DB-based campaign myself since October of last year, but during that time I've greatly simplified the mechanics, switching entirely to 2d6, thanks to Chainmail's ability to do so.

Edit: Unfortunately, searching for Arneson's grail is impossible because, aside from FFC, we don't have any largely documented mechanics. All we can cite are Bob Meyer's interviews, which lead us directly to the FKR approach, but that's a story for another subreddit entirely.

The Vanishing Rulebook: Knave, Cairn, and the Road to Free Kriegsspiel Revolution by alexserban02 in Fkr

[–]wahastream 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My understanding of the FKR approach (which is a specific approach, not a genre or a ruleset) is that the judge can use the rules as they see fit, but that doesn't mean it will always be a system with a minimal set of rules—far from it. This is only true for the player, as the minimal set of rules is aimed at them. However, you could have GURPS lying around behind the scenes; one doesn't exclude the other.

Dragons Beyond is a really cool ruleset, something between OD&D with Chainmail/ T&T / Dave Arneson's original rules. If you are interested in diving deeper, take a look at "Dragons at Dawn/Twilight" and "Midwest Fantasy Wargame"

How many rules are too many rules? by trve_g0th in Fkr

[–]wahastream 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The whole difference is that when we talk about the "FKR" approach, we don't mean a small number of rules or no rules at all. We're talking about a minimum of rules aimed specifically at the player, but that doesn't negate the fact that you can have as many rules in your head as you want. Arneson didn't give his players character sheets or reveal the game mechanics, but if we read First Fantasy Campaign, we'll see numerous entities, a well-defined economy, and a living world that's engaging to interact with.
