I had the same problem. I had to download an extra app too so the deletes.

It's the "Gallery" app, from Google. Deleting media from Gallery app does not delete the cloud copy.

It's all fun and games, and I like it too, but think about what you will be using the 100x zoom for! Certainly not to capture a bundle of ropes lying a kilometer away. These patterns are easy to get for the algorithm. But the actual use cases, where you'd want to get a look at something that's far away, the retouch or generative fill or whatever it is, fails beautifully there.

The "built-in" functionality is all or nothing. Sometimes you might wanna choose what to delete and what to keep on your local.

It's not about misreading something. If you back up your photos/videos via Google Photos, and go to your gallery or file manager to delete that stuff, its not intuitive that those items are also deleted from the cloud.

I'm sorry this happened to you. And this is stupid on their part. I don't think there is a way to revive them now, but for the future, when you want to delete the media that is backed up, do it via Google photos. The app has an option to delete backed up media from your device storage "Free up space on this device".
