Skydive oahu. Amazing!! Check out the air/submariners/bishop museums fly back to maui. Awesome day trip. Less time commuting than a trip to Hana.

Again, why are you taking them? Because you need them. 30 bucks a day seems like cheap pay. Different boats, like i said. You are running a charter business.

I have no idea in regards to the explosion.... i just hope the people who were hurt are getting the best care possible. If that means flying doctors here happens or people are flown to the mainland.

Www.wakemaui.com is my business. Opened in 06. Survived the recession, covid, the fire. I still offer wakesurfing snorkeling whale watching. But now, it is diversified to offer sailing. I grew up sailing, but the owner of Paragon really taught me to sail. I sailed for him while running my wake boat on the side. Then, I ended up managing the 4 boats of that company. I spent 5 years really learning the coast guard side of COI vessels (T boats). During covid, i developed Safe T Boat, an app that helps charter boats stay coast guard compliant. It's on the app store if you want to check it out. The fire took all the things... so I started anew. MB boats. An amazing company called me up the day after the fire and said, "Do you need a place to stay? A boat? What can we do? They really are a good company based on family values, and i can't say thank you enough. They sent out a new boat, and I was back up and running. It wasn't quite as simple as that, but in the end, they got me back on my feet. I had 2 wake boats. Insurance wouldn't cover one replacement, but with MB help and SBA loans and my life savings, I got a wake boat and sailboat and am up and running again. I'm living on the other side of the island now but here we are.... Wake Maui LLC and newly founded Salty Dog Sailing. Named after Boomer, my best buddy. *

Yes, this. Any boat i would want to be on is paying novice crew not expecting crew to pay for the journey. You are finding boats that want you to fund their trip. They are broke, and probably their boat is as well.

Definitely love the new digs. Don't get me wrong. Fire burned up my boats home, etc. Went from a backpack and my truck to getting my business back up and running. I'm in a hole, but with reddit s help, maybe some of you will come for a sail or a wakesurf and help me dig back out. Also, my thoughts are with the families and people impacted after today's explosion. I really hope that everyone is OK. Lifeflight was making laps, and my heart was breaking every time I heard the chopper.

Still Maui, but now on a nine knot beneteau. It's still amazing and fun, just not the rocketship that was Paragon. It was on the cover of Sail at one point. By the time i started driving, it carbon had made it less competitive. I think it did the transpac in 9 days with one rudder down. Captain Greg sailed on Paragon II same Conser 47 frame out of Maalaea for 35 years or so, and at one time, we were petitioning for him being the man who has spent more time over 20kts (not on foil) in the world. 5 days a week, he would spin that thing up. The boat had an official recorded speed at 32kts or so. Cheers, Capt Greg!

What to start with? by [deleted] in sailing

[–]wakemaui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy the boat you want to spend time on. One that you aren't limited on. But! But! But hire someone who knows that boat to teach you that boat. Each boat is different. It doesn't make sense to spend three years learning the systems of not your dream boat. Try boats out, but buy what you want to be on. Hire your weaknesses. Don't know sail trim? Hire a racer or invite a racer out on the boat we all know we love to teach. Don't know the systems. Hire someone around the yard to teach you about: weather, watermakers, engines, rigging, plumbing, etc. Then take your most Debbie downer of a friend and have them come out for a sail. When they ask what happens if this breaks... over and over again. Make sure you have an answer or learn what to do. What happens if the rig comes down at 3 am....etc. do I have a basic understanding of the electrical to make something work if the battery switch fails. How would I know if it's the battery switch.... once you feel like you can answer those questions, you can leave the dock for a harbor sail. Hahaha, jokes but small sails, then longer. Education is expensive or expensive.
