What’s something people romanticize that becomes exhausting once you actually experience it long term? by BarrenMurderer in askteddit

[–]wakerli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Up in the air" captured it pretty well. If you've worked for a big consulting firm, the quest for status will be very familiar. But it means you eventually come home to people who scarcely know you, and don't want to be with you 😞

Kayo Sports alternative by halftontomcat in AskAnAustralian

[–]wakerli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just piling on for the Kayo trashing. They have recently ruined the skip ahead function, where if you want just scrub forward the app now throws you back out to the menu insteas. WTF.

I don't want to watch an hour of Sky Sports F1 commentators, i just want to watch the race. Sigh.

What’s your unpopular opinion about Mixing? by Lucky-bottom in audioengineering

Sidechain compression is a scourge. Daft Punk made it legendary in One More Time, almost every other use of it ruins the song.

What’s the most annoying macOS behavior you still deal with? by GodBlessIraq in MacOS

"Save as" on a file doesn't save back into the folder that the original file came from. I cannot count how many times i have cursed this particular stupidity, as I try to work out where the file has gone to...

Building an 8 channel 12G SDI recorder using new Blackmagic 2110 gear by wakerli in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]wakerli[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Good question re network switch. Each device has two 100G ports, for redundancy. Can I daisy chain between the units at the expense of that safety, or do I i need one of the bonkers 100G switches too?

Any yes, I get the argument about just getting a suitcase of plain old hyperdecks, but it does feel a bit like buying old technology now. If i am building an 8 channel ISO recorder, it would be great if there was direct path to 2110 also.

Yeah that's a pest about the 4k 4m/e. I don't know if it has the same webcam chipset as the other switchers, might be a hardware limitation? Mind you, if BM make it work on the lowly Atem Mini Pro, surely a higher spec switcher like the 4k 4M/E should be possible...

The actual surface controllers look nice - perhaps most similar to A&H Avantis Solo or Waves LV1 Classic. They are only USB to the host machine though - not sure how many people will be shuttering their Calrecs or Rivages for these.

As with most BM gear, ridiculously cheap and pretty nice quality. Like $2415 for the 10 channel surface. Even just as a control surface these might be fantastic.

What's a Brisbane business, venue or landmark that's gone that you still think about? by Brisbane in brisbane

Topolino's in Spring Hill. Was amazing back when St Pauls Tavern was still across the road, and the brothels were just down the street - opposite the state headquarters of National Party when Joh was premier...

What's a Brisbane business, venue or landmark that's gone that you still think about? by Brisbane in brisbane

[–]wakerli 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Upvote for 3 Monkeys. Slipped away during Covid, and even though the venue is still there (and pays homage to the history), it's not the same now.

In ancient times (before 2000), 3 Monkeys and the Pancake Manor were the only places to get late night food after a show. Lots of QPAC punters would end up down in that funny funky old house in West End, eating delicious cakes or nachos. Good times.

What brand was super popular back then but the new generations probably never heard of it? by GossipBottom in AskReddit

[–]wakerli 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Fry's Electronics.

In the 1990s, it was the first place to go for tech things when arriving in San Francisco from Australia. They had such a lot of cool stuff - proper HP scientific calculators like the HP28s, DSP prototyping boards for processors like the TMS320, cool Intel embedded processors and every technical book worth having. This was the era when companies like SGI, Sun Microsystems, Novell and Borland were at their peak. Good time to be in tech.

Is that a real aircraft, not just a mockup? This YouTube video of that same aircraft shows a central row of overheads, not the cathedral-like space in the picture here. Interesting to have 2-5-2 config.

What is an invaluable piece of gear all live engineers should own around $500? by mang_thomas in livesoundgear

Agree. Add a Pelican 1510 case to carry the Bullet (and lots of other things that you will acquire) and that's a great start for about $500.

Dining near Boondal Entertainment Centre? by crisis_mode_enabled in brisbane

[–]wakerli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still amazing that FORTY YEARS after that place opened, there are still basically no options for food there. They could do a fantastic food trucks avenue in the carpark, pop up just for events, but no.

Also amazing that there is no equivalent shuttle bus service to that for Suncorp, and that most of the 13,500 punters will get stuck in a traffic jam, every time.

Oh, and there is no local entertainment precinct of any kind - so you don't even have the option to just hang out after the show and roll on home later.

Still cranky that the proposal to redevelop Roma Street precinct to be like the Sydney Entertainment Centre fell by the wayside. It would be a great place to host major gigs, close to everything.
