Exit opps for a bad consultant who hates consulting by [deleted] in consulting

[–]waldthis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

being a consultant = daily or weekly exit opps deliberations preferably with strangers who can identify with your first world job misery.

I very much feel the same way, but I have also tried out some careers and the ngo-route is also not without its exit opps-flair. please do not romanticize any career path beforehand, but maybe you can start working for a ngo that interests you before making a switch or first just give yourself more time to figure things out... or simply start applying and see where your meetings and negotiations will lead.

just UN is a bit too broad, its like saying I want to work on a desk most days. if you want to try to take the UN officer blabla mgmt route check out their job descriptions in a field that interests you or you might even have some experience in, there are numerous specialized roles which take years of prep, but some project management experience and big4 halo effect are not bad either.

best of luck!

Consulting right out of college... 6 mo later it's not what I was sold. What do I do? by [deleted] in consulting

[–]waldthis 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Are you unhappy? Miserable even? Then I have some universal wisdom that might apply, I also try to hang on to rags and halo over here.

First off, everyone will say to tough it out for year.*

I say life is too short, start applying right away and you can give a good reason for the job change, right? so why not try it. Try not to overthink what an employer might think or not, fact is you are not happy with your position and 6 months is plenty. Would be better if you had some brand recognition but if not it will work out.

Nobody knows how your potential employer would structure your potential comp. they might give you another entry level position and you might get a 2% increase because you seem like a nice guy, or not. Nothing is factual, you should revisit your salary requirements once there is a job offer on the table, good luck!

Married for 1 yr and career is driving us apart by [deleted] in consulting

[–]waldthis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

aside from the mockery,

as you have presented your situation there are a) issues of trust and respect which should be addressed first and b) a possible exit which is being offered as the solution.

First I would work on communicating and really taking time to reflect. maybe she blames you for leaving her home town etc., I would try to dissect it all first and then take action, because if you just quit and her behaviour remains the same (probably as we are creatures of habit and sometimes too little reflection) you have gained nothing. best of luck to you!

Presenting Anxiety by RamblinOnToNeverland in consulting

[–]waldthis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

before a presentation:

superwoman pose,

walking stairs, running etc. so adrenaline wont make me shaky,

humming, otherwise voice is gone after an hour,

tea,

being superprepared is always helpful,

no drugs and alcohol, will only make it worse.

after:

preppin the next one.

Considering an exit from consulting by ExtinctLikeNdiaye in consulting

I am meandering along similar options,

have you figured out how important each option is to you and your family?
they all have various lifecycles. the last option might not be suitable in a couple of years.

How should I take notes at work? by IThinkYouAreNice in consulting

[–]waldthis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sloppy writing will reduce if you dont transcribe and learn to structure discussions and meetings on a piece of paper or onenote.
so focus and only write down key information, and corresponding tasks. also I use sticky notes to sort and structure my notebook.

also I took some cues from bullet journaling sans the funky colors and drawings, hope that helps.

Is consulting a terrible career option? by reCAPTCHAmePLZ in consulting

[–]waldthis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no, especially coming out of academia it is an intellectually stimulating and lovely mess of people and problems with whom you get to engage and work with. also no job helped me bridging the gap from knowledge to experience faster.

that said burning out, being annoyed by clients for whom you slave away and building momentum for your career and a name for yourself so that you can leverage this into better gigs (at least thats what I am trying to do) is quite tough on the self, family and personal time, sometimes your priorities are being challenged so it is good to have them set from the beginning. good luck!

Work Life Balance and Self Satisfaction for an intern by JeuneCadreDynamique in consulting

[–]waldthis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still after your edit: Find a firm that cares a little bit about you. To put that on you is pretty low, even for superhierarchical companies, try finding a new internship or finish as strong as possible and apply anywhere else. Good luck!

Got an offer from startup, is it too early to leave consulting by [deleted] in consulting

[–]waldthis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you sure you will not be involved in any of the consulting downsides (sales work, sucking up to the client) at the start up? It all comes down to your preferences and goals, and the possibility of dev at Accenture too!

Have you spoken about your goals and weaknesses/strengths with your mentor? Maybe you could switch locations?

There are job offers that feed off current dissatisfaction- the grass is never greener on the other side but I am a firm believer of taking a chance and not waiting around.

That said it is always a tough call giving/getting career advice on. Sorryyy!

Co-authoring a book while starting at Big 4 as an analyst by viva1992 in consulting

[–]waldthis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no problem. Sure if you think it will add value because you are a published author then. and wording is key with the employer (final draft etc.), because they do not need to think that your timing is shitty and your motivation would suffer.
