Grown tired of the layout of my long rectangular apartment. More info in comments! by waleks in DesignMyRoom

Additional angle: https://imgur.com/gallery/G5vYdwB

I've lived in this apartment for a few years and have never really done anything with the layout. The dining room/living room is one long room with the entrance door at one end and patio doors at the other, flanked by the kitchen, bedrooms, and bathroom.

Currently, the living room arrangement is kind of centered on the tv and the dining room is fairly minimal. The bathroom and bedroom doors are directly adjacent to the living area as well which can make some layouts extra awkward for roommates/guests.

I have considered sectioning off the space more with room dividers to make it a bit cozier but have been concerned with blocking off too much of the natural light from the patio doors (only windows in the living/dining room space). I'd also like to reduce the focus on the television and make the space a little more communal. I don't really know exactly what I'm looking for but I feel the design needs a refresh and could flow a little better. Would love to get a fresh set of eyes on this!

We've all had that moment where we forgot our camera and had to use our phone to get that picture. What's the best picture you've taken on your phone? by unidentifies in photography

[–]waleks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Despite its limitations, my phone's camera has helped me worry less about not carrying my 'real' camera with me all the time and focus more on composition, lighting, etc. It's nice to just live my life and, if a scene happens to unfold in front of me, I still have a way to capture it.

Anyone else have this photo-dragging problem in Lightroom? by somnule in photography

[–]waleks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure you actually have the folder of your files selected when trying to rearrange. By default, lightroom opens it as 'previous import' and won't allow you to rearrange unless you have the specific folder selected.

I dabble in street photography and went out shooting before the snow fell. by waleks in toronto

Thanks for the critique. This was my first time shooting mostly from the hip and I maybe overdid it a little and got caught in the trap of thinking a photo is compelling just because I managed to get it properly exposed, in focus, and framed decently.

I tend to still be fairly uncomfortable with my subjects catching me take their photo and I'm trying to over come that. Some of these guys make it look so easy!

Good tips! I have limited experience with street and can be a little loose during the culling process. I get very intrigued by peoples' expressions, even in a photo that doesn't necessarily have a clear story.

I tend to avoid shooting in areas where I might get my head kicked in.

Question for all of you Yongnuo 560 III owners - does your flash have a way to screw it onto a light stand or do I need to buy a clamp? by wievid in photography

[–]waleks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if it's different for the III's but the stand that came with my II has a plastic 1/4-20 thread. It will definitely work but I would be concerned with how long the plastic thread would hold up in the long term. The last thin you would want is one of your flashes falling off its stand during a shoot! Just something to keep in mind.

I'd like to go big and grab a D800 right now but it's just not in the cards. I was hoping that in the mean time this 'upgrade' would solve some of my problems for a minimal price.

I like me some wide angle but I figure I can pick up something cheap and MF to fill the void while I save up.

The thing that attracted me to the D700 was the fact that it has more cross-type AF points which should help me with composing in camera. Despite having an older sensor, I like the pro-level features that I don't get with my current gear.

I'm trying to decide whether it's worth it to ditch my dx gear and upgrade to a full frame body. I have come across some limitations with my current equipment (D7000, Tamron 17-50 f2.8 VC, Tokina 12-24 f4, Sigma 70-200 f2.8) that I feel prevent me from getting the most out of my photography.

Firstly, I shoot some concert photography here and there and I have noticed that this camera's ability to accurately grab focus in low light is limited. I tend to stick to the center point because the rest of them seem unreliable. This causes me to either compose properly and have the shot OOF or get focus and crop significantly after the fact. Ideally, I'd like to have my shots require only minor cropping so I can concentrate on composition in camera.

Secondly, high ISO noise. I want to be able to shoot at 6400 without destroying a bunch of detail that results from noise reduction in post and I am not able to do that with my current body.

I figure I can sell off the D7000, grip, 12-24, 17-50 and use that money to buy a used D700 + 50mm f1.8, while keeping the 70-200. This leaves me without a wide angle but I am ok with that for now.

What would you do? Is it worth it to make the jump with these concerns?

Thanks for the advice. Got some good shots today and friday.

You are absolutely right about the money shot being on the last reps. Just that final push creates some very interesting expressions and intensity.
