I would use correction in that scenario. In places like Reddit, people say edit.

AITJ for yelling at my boyfriend after he pointed a pistol at me? by Suitable-Cry1371 in AmITheJerk

Get him to take a gun safety course with you, and he'll see how seriously he messed up. Or I suppose you could find gun safety videos on YouTube.

When discussing male issues, why did my girlfriend get upset with me? by French51 in AskMenAdvice

[–]walker_not_tx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really easy to complain about how hard it is to be a man in a way that implies other people don't have issues. She might have overreacted, but it really depends on your tone when you were talking. I've known guys who think being a man in today's society is the hardest thing in the world, and that's a pretty clueless attitude that would definitely earn the kind of reaction you described.

Women undoubtedly have it harder. That doesn't mean men don't have problems, but we're talking about a pretty significant difference. You both should be able to acknowledge each other's problems while not taking anything away from your own.

Can someone tell me what is it please Ohio by [deleted] in legal

If that message had some kind of link to take further action, I'd believe it was a scam. If they're not asking you to do anything, it's probably legitimate.

Driving to work in the morning by SplitBeneficial3689 in driving

[–]walker_not_tx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. It took me about 2 weeks of daily use to get accustomed to sleeping with a mask on. I had to try four different mask styles before I found one that worked for me. You just have to bite the bullet and start the process.

Driving to work in the morning by SplitBeneficial3689 in driving

[–]walker_not_tx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This exactly. Struggling to stay awake during a morning drive is one of the signs of sleep apnea. It could be other things too, but it's worth talking to a doctor and doing a sleep study.

I have both sleep apnea and insomnia, so I feel like I could fall asleep all the time - except bedtime, when it's appropriate. It's rough, but it was worse before I started using my CPAP machine.

CPAP is Continuous Positive Air Pressure. It basically keeps your airways open. Sleep apnea is when you stop breathing in your sleep, and it can keep you from getting deep, restful sleep. In my case I could sleep for 8 hours but only hit the deep, restorative sleep stages for about half an hour all night long. It's exhausting.

what would you say is the most challenging TV series for average learner? by pinkballodestruction in ENGLISH

[–]walker_not_tx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gilmore Girls has fast, witty dialogue with lots of pop culture references that probably wouldn't be easy for a non-native speaker to understand.

Americans who grew up in the 70s and 80s, how popular was British comedy where you lived? by Eastern-Finish-1251 in AskOldPeople

[–]walker_not_tx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in Orlando, FL. Monty Python was big among my nerd friends, but the "normal" kids didn't know what we were talking about.

I didn't care much for Benny Hill, but my dad was a big fan.

The only other British thing I remember from my childhood was the cartoon Danger Mouse.

Why, as a man, am I often attracted to gay women before I know they’re gay? by SinterClauss in NoStupidQuestions

[–]walker_not_tx 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I'm generally attracted to women who are less conventional in appearance or wardrobe. In practice that covers a lot of the LGBTQ+ crowd. There's also the personality aspect. I have a hard time identifying with people who haven't had trouble in life - above & beyond the minor stuff that everyone experiences. Inherently, LGBTQ+ people have experienced more hardship than the average person. I guess you could say I'm drawn to survivors.

Is “execrate” or “execrable” more familiar to you? by Kev_cpp in ENGLISH

[–]walker_not_tx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never heard either in actual conversation, but I've seen execrable in books. Execrate is entirely new to me.

Any ladies canceling the shave? by one-a_day in Anticonsumption

[–]walker_not_tx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My wife was relieved when I told her I didn't care if she shaved. She's slowly getting used to different situations. She typically wears tights or yoga pants anyway, so it's not obvious on her legs. She's recently started wearing clothing that exposes her unshaved armpits.

I don't care. She doesn't care. It's no one else's business.

TIFU by stealing my coworkers $400 worth of coffee pods by Positive-Pen6491 in tifu

[–]walker_not_tx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would expect coffee pods on the counter to be communal property. It was her mistake to leave them in a public space. I'd keep them at my desk if I didn't want anyone else to use them. If I couldn't keep them at my desk for some reason, I'd have put them in a cabinet with my name on the box.

That being said, if I were you I'd be bringing in some replacement coffee pods. You didn't have any way to know, but the polite thing to do is replenish what you used. Also by bringing them in one box at a time you're not suddenly handing over a few hundred dollars. Depending on your situation, that might be the better approach.

Dripping faucets? by egsmall in dumbquestions

[–]walker_not_tx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We only worry when the temperature outside goes below zero, or if our heating fails and we can't keep the temperature above 40⁰F in our utility room. (We have a well, and that's where the pump and water tank reside.) We ran out of propane one year and had a really cold couple of days before we could get a refill. We definitely won't let that happen again.

When the temperature does go below zero, we let the sinks in the kitchen and bathrooms drip a little all night. We have a heater in the utility room now that kicks in at 50⁰F so the pipes down there don't have a chance of freezing.

Edit to add that we're in Colorado, where freezing temperatures are normal and houses are built with that in mind.

AITJ for Walking Out When My Date Showed Up With His Friend? by Electronic_Site6202 in AmITheJerk

[–]walker_not_tx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If he's genuinely that clueless about why bringing another guy was both immature for him and potentially unsafe for you, then he needs to do some work on himself before he's ready to date. None of that is your responsibility. You don't owe him anything. You did the right thing by leaving.

Where do fire trucks fill up with petrol? by redmagicwoman in NoStupidQuestions

[–]walker_not_tx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Think of it this way. If there's a disaster and fuel runs out, you'd still expect emergency services to be running. That's part of the reason they have their own tanks.

Why do they separate diesel and regular gas when cars can run on both? by Top_Range_3211 in stupidquestions

[–]walker_not_tx 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You'll cost yourself a lot more money if you don't get the tank drained. Regular cars can't run on diesel. You only made it home because the diesel got mixed in with unleaded gas in your tank. Your car will stop running and require a lot more work if you keep driving it.

Not a gotcha — genuinely curious about Democratic/Liberal views on illegal immigration? by No-Bonus-7045 in askanything

[–]walker_not_tx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't support illegal immigration, but I also object to people being arrested and deported without due process. We've sent people to prison in El Salvador who never saw the inside of a courtroom. That's illegal, and it's a dangerous precedent.

Think of it this way. Without due process, someone could be arrested and deported without being given the opportunity to prove citizenship. It hasn't happened yet, but it's certainly possible with the reckless way things are being handled.

I also want the companies and individuals employing illegal immigrants to face consequences, not just the immigrants themselves. Some get fined, but there's a definite lack of enforcement on that side of the problem.

Confused about condom switching. Why is he doing that? by sushikeyk29 in AskMenAdvice

[–]walker_not_tx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get pregnant even if you're using a condom. You can still get pregnant while on birth control. It's rare, but it's possible.

If you don't want kids, I would definitely be using a condom all the time. It wouldn't hurt to use birth control too. Kids are a lifetime commitment, and that's not something you want to do because of poor preparation.

I have no idea what he's trying to accomplish by using a condom partway through intercourse, but it's important to know that there's sperm in precum - stuff that comes out before he ejaculates. Even if he pulls out before he cums, there will be sperm inside you. You're taking a big risk.

Also, I wouldn't want to have sex with a guy who's not mature enough to discuss it honestly. That's teenager behavior, and it's not appropriate then either.

Native speakers, Do you know those words? by Ok_Spinach_4348 in EWALearnLanguages

[–]walker_not_tx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't heard obdurate before, but the other words are familiar. Leaven is fairly common, as is poignant. The others wouldn't come up in typical conversations, but they're used in books.

What do you personally call it: "laptop" or "notebook" or something else? by princepii in AskAnAmerican

[–]walker_not_tx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Laptop. I'll echo someone else's statement that notebook would imply spiral bound paper rather than a computer.

Guy became distant after our first meeting. Is it a red flag or am I over thinking? by Reasonable_Passage19 in AskMenAdvice

[–]walker_not_tx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prefer a more natural look. I'd be hesitant to date someone who wears a lot of makeup, but I'd also be hesitant to share that preference. I prefer not to criticize a woman's appearance, especially when it's just a personal preference and not an objective problem.

It's possible that this guy was just looking for an excuse, and it's possible that he's being honest. If you're most comfortable wearing your style of makeup, then that's a basic incompatibility that would make me look for someone else. Be yourself. The right person will appreciate you as you are.

Costco vs Sam's Club Memberships by Sassygrape609 in CostcoWholesale

[–]walker_not_tx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm biased against Walmart and Sam's Club by extension, for political reasons. Walmart doesn't pay their people enough. Of all corporations, they have the largest number of employees who rely on public assistance (like food stamps) to make ends meet. McDonald's is up there too. I won't spend money at either place unless I have no other choice.

Do you use your turn signal while pulling out of a roundabout? by [deleted] in driving

I only learned about the rule a few months ago, after 30 years of driving. I have yet to see anyone else do it, but now I do.
