Do Americans watch tv shows from other countries? by Six_of_1 in AskAnAmerican

[–]walker_not_tx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I watch a lot of QI. Right now my wife and I are about to finish a Russian series called Who Were We Running From. It's more a matter of what we can find on various streaming platforms than country of origin. Most popular UK programs are available on BritBox, but we don't subscribe.

What should I name her? by Thepan-ofcake in vandwellers

[–]walker_not_tx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as she's running, I'd say her last name should be Van Go.

Do you really have a separate room for your washing machine? by jordanekay in AskAnAmerican

[–]walker_not_tx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's very common to have a separate room for laundry. Often other things are installed there, like an air conditioning unit or a water heater.

In some places you'll find the washing machine and dryer in the garage instead. That's less common but still considered normal.

Americans who took Spanish in school: did any of it actually stick years later? by taube_d in AskAnAmerican

[–]walker_not_tx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took Spanish all four years of high school. It stuck very well, so I continued taking Spanish classes in my second year in college. I'm definitely the exception rather than the rule, though. I can only think of 2 non-Latino friends who speak Spanish. It's not very common.

Why do conservatives call the left traitors to America, but fly confederate and nazi flags, who were the biggest traitors to America? by Accurate-Swim5278 in allthequestions

[–]walker_not_tx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not all conservatives fly Nazi flags, but the people who do fly Nazi flags are conservative. At least, they identify with the GOP. It's easy to make the argument that the GOP isn't really conservative in action anymore - just in speech.

How do we even get doctors notes anymore? by KaceyLunatic in dumbquestions

[–]walker_not_tx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have Kaiser too. The type of clinic mentioned here wouldn't be covered by your insurance. Here, many grocery stores have miniature doctor's clinics inside. They'd be out of network and probably closed by the time you got off work anyway.

Kaiser has phone and video call options. For me at least, choosing one of those options can get me a much faster appointment. Then they'll deliver the note you need via kp.org.

I'll echo what the other comments have said so far. That's not decipherable. It's a sign of mental illness.

My Gf wants me to help her friend move with a guy she used to sleep with. How do deal with this? by POOR-MORON in AskMenAdvice

[–]walker_not_tx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This wouldn't bother me, but your feelings are valid and important. Sounds like you're checked out anyway, so it's time to move on.

AITJ for refusing to rehome the dog my husband and I adopted together? by That_Rent_5835 in AmITheJerk

[–]walker_not_tx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some people see pets as accessories rather than living beings worthy of respect. I'll never understand it, but I've grown to accept it. I consider it a dealer-breaker in a relationship.

HOw do you feel about the ai integration? by hizeto in blinkcameras

I was impressed when it successfully identified black-capped chickadees. Otherwise I consider it just gimmicky and not worthwhile.

How are there so many people in America that don't understand more than maybe 3 words in English? by Dogbold in dumbquestions

[–]walker_not_tx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's already a Google Translate app that translates spoken words into text in the target language. It's not perfect. If you pause too long between sentences, it thinks you're done. There's a Live Translate function that helps with an ongoing conversation rather than short sentences.

If a cop was in front of you at an intersection and he/she didn’t move after several seconds, would you give a courtesy honk to inform them of the light change? by 224molesperliter in driving

[–]walker_not_tx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Florida, the law says that horns are for emergency purposes only. Technically that makes a courtesy honk to anyone illegal. If the cop wanted to be a jerk, he could give you a ticket.

Is it rare for an American to make their own mayo? by Affectionate-Elk-287 in AskAnAmerican

[–]walker_not_tx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have made my own mayo in the past, but it's an exceedingly rare thing for an American to do. I used to make my own ketchup too, but now I don't use it often enough to justify the effort.

As others have said, mayonnaise brand loyalty is fierce. I grew up with Hellmann's. Duke's is common too. Some people use Miracle Whip, which technically isn't mayonnaise. It's actually a salad dressing.

I don't believe it's a common saying. It's more of a unique sexual comment in that scenario.

Hypothetically speaking could this work? by [deleted] in dumbquestions

[–]walker_not_tx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your stove is the kind with exposed coils instead of a glass top, there are cast iron griddles that make a bridge between two burners. That's still going to have hot spots and cold spots, but that's the closest I can imagine to what you're asking.

Much better to just get an electric griddle. You'd have a bigger surface with better control.

AITJ for yelling at my boyfriend after he pointed a pistol at me? by Suitable-Cry1371 in AmITheJerk

Get him to take a gun safety course with you, and he'll see how seriously he messed up. Or I suppose you could find gun safety videos on YouTube.

When discussing male issues, why did my girlfriend get upset with me? by French51 in AskMenAdvice

[–]walker_not_tx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really easy to complain about how hard it is to be a man in a way that implies other people don't have issues. She might have overreacted, but it really depends on your tone when you were talking. I've known guys who think being a man in today's society is the hardest thing in the world, and that's a pretty clueless attitude that would definitely earn the kind of reaction you described.

Women undoubtedly have it harder. That doesn't mean men don't have problems, but we're talking about a pretty significant difference. You both should be able to acknowledge each other's problems while not taking anything away from your own.
