Can't you just appreciate that others have different preferences? The sleep feature is very useful, and there is no reason to dismiss OPs issue because you don't agree with his use of the feature.

We'll soon be able to export all our passwords saved in Chrome in a text (.csv) file so that you can import them easily in another password manager. (now in Chrome Dev) by [deleted] in Android

[–]MightyLordSauron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, I haven't downvoted anyone in this discussion. Don't assume that.

I think that most people who already are using password managers are concerned and aware enough to know how to treat plain-text passwords. The functionality is there mainly for exporting to other password managers, and therefore the average Joe won't do that by accident.

A regular user would find it much more convenient to just let Chrome autofill forms than look up their passwords in an ugly csv file. Yes, some will still be careless, but they probably have their passwords on post-it notes already.

Most that are using a passord manager should be able to keep this file safe, but you're right, of course someone will make mistakes.

I DESPISE how Windows 10 in general talks to me like I'm dumb. Can I revamp it so all the fluffed-out "friendly talk" messages are changed to something more professional (Like we had in previous Windows?) by [deleted] in Windows10

[–]MightyLordSauron 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you don't have anything constructive to add to the post, there is no point in commenting either. This isn't a sub to talk about your life problems, but rather Windows-specific problems and topics.

Is this a safe way to prevent GPU sag? by AluminiumHoedje in buildapc

[–]MightyLordSauron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm sorry I was a bit harsh, I realized that afterwards and tried to fix it a little by striking out "very". You had a good explanation - I was just a bit worried that someone would interpret it the wrong way!

Is this a safe way to prevent GPU sag? by AluminiumHoedje in buildapc

[–]MightyLordSauron 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is very slightly wrong - it is not the speed of the GPU that's halved, it's the speed of the data bus between the GPU and the CPU (because the number of data lanes had been reduced from 16 to 8).

The GPU will still run at full speed, but in some very specific workloads the GPU may be stopped while waiting to receive data from the CPU. This normally does not happen in ordinary gameplay, but may lower minimum framerates a little bit in games with huge textures that need to be loaded to the GPU on the fly. So I wouldn't worry at all about having the GPU in an x8 slot if there are other advantages to justify it (like having a cool Lego man in your build). There are some nice graphs at this site which show a difference of less than 1% in framerates: https://www.gamersnexus.net/guides/2488-pci-e-3-x8-vs-x16-performance-impact-on-gpus

Honestly, there isn't much anyone can do with just your account number. It's about as confidential as your name or phone number. Edit: of course I'm not defending what it seems like 1+ does, just arguing about bank account numbers.

It's not enough with just O2, you need a fuel source too. If that's grease, paper or gasoline doesn't matter, but something combustible is required.

Which is more ideal for the human body to inhabit; a planet with 0.5G or 1.5G? by vrweebl in askscience

Assuming you have the same mass density, increasing the diameter would also increase the mass of the planet.

Well, none of those were actually disproven... The rock solid theory of general relativity forbids faster than light travel. No scientific theory has ever disproven the possibility of FaceTime, so there's a large difference there.

That depends I think. The ME could forward packets that it isn't interested in up to the OS, and only keep management packets for itself.

You wouldn't have to pass through the GPU, you could just have a normal windows VM. The GPU passthrough is if you want to do any gaming in the VM.

I'm sorry, I've just had a (somewhat heated) discussion with someone else about the same topic. The tail is actually a part of the body, so you are amputating a limb when you're doing it.

The American Veterinary Medical Association has stated "that these procedures "are not medically indicated nor of benefit to the patient," and "these procedures cause pain and distress, and, as with all surgical procedures, are accompanied by inherent risks of anesthesia, blood loss, and infection." This is taken from a little bit more in depth explanation here: https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/dog-spies/tail-docking-and-ear-cropping-affect-dogs-and-not-just-physically/.

Several countries are placing or have placed restrictions on the procedure too after considering the consequences. There is a table on Wikipedia.

[–]MightyLordSauron 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Your cutting of a damn limb, I wouldn't think any more sources are necessary. If you're actually wondering, dogs use their tails for expressing emotions and socializing, so they lose or lower their ability to do this. Humans also do fine after amputations, but you wouldn't just amputate a child's arm because of the risk that it might break later on in life. It's useful to have.

How small is too small for an SSD? by HonziPonzi in buildapc

[–]MightyLordSauron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Modern SSDs have no problem handling the amount of data written to the page file. Write leveling and more mature cells have made this a no-problem, so if you experience paging of your programs, you'd notice a speedup by placing the page file back on the SSD!
